My friend is trying to get his two computers to see eachother and it just isn't working. He is using a crossover cable between the two computers. Each of them have windows 98se on them.. we have tried uninstalling all adapters and protocols many times and nothing is working. we've tried using multiple protocols and everything.

please let us know if you have any ideas!!!!!!

thanks
mike

What are your IP settings on the two computers??

Also, what protocols do you have installed, etc...

one computers IP is 192.168.0.7
and the other is 192.168.0.1

both subnet masks are 255.255.255.0

both have TCP/IP and Betbui installed.

One compouter has two net cards in it. One for dsl and the other for the network. DSL works fine.

Do both of them have client for Microsoft Networks enabled instead of Microsoft Family login? You want to have Client for Microsoft Networks Enabled. Also I've heard if you cancel out of the password screen on bootup other PCs won't be able to see your PC.

Make sure that sure that in the identification tab in the network properties make sure both computers have the same workgroup name

Use a hub/switch.

I've spend hours to get a crossover network working. Then added a hub and it worked perfectly.

Yes, THey can ping eachother just fine, and I can find both of them on the network (via find). But when I enable ICS the main computer can't access the net or anything. I can't figure it out.

thanks

Watch your power saving settings. If a subnet master browser (the computer that controls your browse list on a single LAN) decides to sleep, you'll forever query this computer and never get a response.

try turning off power savings.

THIS IS FOR ALL PEOPLE THAT HAVE BROWSING PROBLEMS WITH MSNETWORKING:
Make sure you obey all rules of netbios naming.
1) No computer name longer than 14 characters (really, use alphanumeric characters only. no spaces)
2) belong to same workgroup
3) A computer will not announce itself to the master browser unless the server service is running. This means you have to have some kind of shared resource running on the computer you are trying to contact, file or printer sharing.
4) netbios names must be globally unique (computer name)
5) workgroup names must also be 14 alphanumeric characters or less.

Also, if you are using NT4 or Win2k, you might want to try creating an account on each machine..you could actually be connected but need an account to actually see shared stuff.

Well, the last question I will ask is that have you shared anything on each computer yet? If you have not shared anything other computer will not be able to see it.

You dont have ICS enabled on both machines do you? I was just reading around on MS pages, they say ICS is to only be on enabled on the box with 2 NICs.
