I have just assembled a new PC with GA-7VRXP mother board. I run the Windows smoothly but there is no sound although I installed the software and when I start the computer there is the following message at the very beginning (black screen): "BIOS is not installed because there are no drives attached"
In the system I have AMD XP 1700 ,IBM 80 Gigs HDD, Pioneer DVD- ROM, 512 DDR (2700 Samsung), Radeon 8500 LE (128 DDR, but its software is not installed yet) , Creative lab 56 PCI modem , and a floppy(sony). the audio software instalation seems to be O K but there is no sound ( Ido not Think that I have diabled the sound during instalation but I don not know how to double check it?) ,The Motherboard has " standard CMOS Setup". I would appreciate your inputs, should I exchange the MOBO or there is something that I can do about sound.

I get that same message.. after it does that 'Detecting (/ -- \ |)' thing. I dont know about the sound problem but as i said i got that message and really dont know WTF it is about. You still can get into the bios though, of course...
I cant check more stuff on the mb really right now because I am waiting to get my memory back from Newegg.. Maybe its because I (or/and you) hadnt installed anything yet from the CD that came with the board? Just a guess.

Your MoBo has an integrated RAID controller (looks like 2 extra IDE connectors) -- each time your PC boots it checks the controller for new hardware, if it finds none, you get the message "Ultra BIOS is not installed because there are no drives attached". Since you only have one HD connected to your primary IDE controller and your DVD connected to the secondary IDE controller, you will receive this message everytime the PC boots. If you are not planning to use the RAID controller to add more drives, you can disable it with a "jumper" on the MoBo (refer to the manual in the jumpers section). Anyway, this message has nothing to do with your sound problems.

I can only suggest the following:

1) look in the device manager under "sound, video and game controllers"; click the "+" sign to see if the system has configured those devices properly. If there is a problem with any of these devices, there will be a yellow and black exclamation point by its name - you can also "double click" any of the items to see a Properties screen; if the device is OK, the status section will read "The device is working properly".

2) Try unistalling these devices (right click the name and select uninstall), then reboot to let Windows re-detect the hardware

3) Download updated drivers (if available) from Gigabyte's Homepage

If these suggestions don't help, I'm sure there IS a solution somewhere. I have had my GA-7DXR (also has integrated sound and RAID controller) for just over a year now and am very pleased with it, but ultimately, the decision to exchange/replace is up to you.

Goodluck!

In the bios (hit Del when you see the Processor speed) under Chipset ??? Enable the Sound, Disable the Raid.

The 7vrxp also has an onboard ata 133 controller which will result in the ".....disabled no drives attached" message. So if your hard drive does not support ata 133 then disable that feature in the integrated periphs as well......
