Help for knees?

A friend of mine(age 17) had a bad ski accident a few years ago, had some damage to her knees, and is going for surgery soon. She can walk and be mostly normal, but there is usually pain, and has to take some minor pain pills. I'm trying to find out good information on ways for rehabilitation that will allow her to keep an active lifestyle. Any help?

I'm not a doctor or anything, but maybe she can get some ankle weights that will help her strengthen the knees up a little. What do u guys think?

I think her doctor would be the best bet. Anything you would hear here would be just home remedies. Even a doctor on here would have trouble giving you anything without a good history of the situation.

Won't the physical therapist tell her what to do?

I've had bad knees since I was about 15. (I'm 26 now.) I had no trauma or anything though. I have chondromalacia. (Softening of the patella.) One thing that they told me and that I haven't always done is to do the exercises they show you. If you strengthen your quads, it helps your kneecap track the correct way and it helps a lot. I had knee surgery a few years ago and I was better for about a month. My knees grind horribly and going up stairs, walking, and most anything physical is often painful or out of the question. (I can walk, just not long distances.) Good luck to your friend. I hope that she gets it all settled and is back to normal soon.
