Help for buying deicion on a New computer

So I am tired of using my room mates old lap top. he is moving out in May and so that means to play wow I will need to build a new computer. I got about 1500$ Saved up.
So I was thinking is it better to buy now or should I wait till the summer? I will be in business school this time next year. But I have a great case and monitor so I dont think a laptop makes sense. I I was thinking 1-2 gigs of ram. I got the case and a 22" monitor. I was wondering what a good system is. I dont see how spending 500$ on a graphics card makes sense. so I was hoping prices would go down. Please do tell.

Info:
I plan on building the computer myself. I have built all of my computers my case is a Lian Li PC70 custom mod all fans are temp controlled.

My main concern is saving money since I know I was thinking of an SLI mobo for future upgrading purposes, and I amlooking for best compatability. I am starting to think that I will def. have 2 gigs of ram. I want the best performance and the best compatability. Price is my main concern though.
I will also be going AMD unless intel can convince me otherwise. Will be a 3200-3800 not a 4000 due to how I can't justify the 200-300$ difference between the 2 Still not sure on Cpus G-Cards, or other choices. I have old 4 old 160 GB IDe Hard drives. I plan on getting some SATA driveS( wanted a board that will use the new spec for SATA), and will have to transfer all my old data. I am very curious as to what all of you think. my decision is in your hands Hardware Gurus. Tell me what y think

First off, I like the case. Looks nice.
Second of all, according to what I've seen on the net, the Venice processors should be out in the real world before April 15th, which is quality. Get one of those.

Depending on how your money's looking, your video card selection should go something like this:
6600 GT --> X800 XL --> 6800 GT --> 6800 Ultra --> X850 XT --> X850 XT PE
If you want to SLI, I would suggest using 2x6800 GT.

As far as the RAM goes... Corsair, Geil and OCZ all make primo stuff. It's my understanding that DDR400 is the sweet spot for the RAM unless you plan on overclocking.

Motherboards... DFI, MSI and Asus have all got quality SATA/PCI-e/SLI/all those other goodies boards currently available. Other people will be along with more specifics, my motherboard kung-fu is weak.

Hope this helps!

Oh the lian li case I had from b4 my computer fried, it had a 480 Watt Power supply but I have not tested that power supply to see if it works. The case alone after modding was way expensive. Not something I could afford to spend now a days.

I was wondering Ram wise, I know ram prices are at an all time low now should I pre-buy the ram now if I wait till l8r or just wait till venice is more main-stream I relaly care about price and do now want to break the 1k-1500 mark. I want something fast and doable. I was reading about the 6800Gt there are a bunch of them out there. But do you agree it makes sense to consider SLI an sli motherboard so in the future I can just use 2 instead of re-upgrading other components?

Wow that case has 12 fans!! I didnt think cooling performance necessarily had a linear relationship to the number of fans, but that sure is one heck of a case. What were your temps normally like?

For the motherboard, I would go DFI Lanparty Ultra-D if you are going to be overclocking. For ram, check out this stuff. It is good performance/pricewise. Some people have been hitting 255+ stable with it... Otherwise, if you are willing to spend a little more, I would probably go with ocz vx4000 for about $265. With that pc3200 ram, though, you should invest in a heatspreader, or possibly active cooling for overclocking potential.

depends how often you upgrade.go sli mobo if you like to upgrade every year. if you only upgrade every 2-3years or more, it's better to by a single slot mobo since, even if you do upgrade, you wont have all the features like WGF1.0 support and all the other new features supported. no point getting 2x6800gts if you cant run the new games without the new features, cause that should be the only reason to buy a gfx card, to make stuff look better. if you disagree, i dare yuo to switch to onboard or the oldest vid card you have lying around and pllay some wolenstein 3d and see how painful it is.

My upgrade path is going to be minimal. I used to love overclocking but I wont have the time to do any of that. I was thinking that if I got an SLI combo, I could just come back in a year or 2 and put in another and be fine. Thus saving more money.

but you wont have support in 2 years for the new standards when it comes out if you sli. it's like playing with the speed of a 6800, but the features and quality of a geforce4 ti. stuff dosent look nearly as good, even though ti may run silky smooth. every year is good, 2 years or more isnt good.

Saving more money compared to what? If you can't justify spending $200-$300 for a better processor, how can you justify spending $500 more (in the long run) for an SLI board with two video cards?

I think you need to prioritize a bit more.

Well, I was thinking that in 2 years I would most likely have the money to do that. But I think it makes more sense with the 1 card solution after reading what everyone is writing. So what it boils down to is deciding after Venice comes out by then or wait till july/august.

SLI is not a great way to upgrade, for reasons stated by mwmorph. It's a fad technology that's better for staying way up on top of the performance curve, not for smart upgrading.

Also, 6800GT will be great for world of warcraft.

Go for 4x512mb Corsair Value PC3200, and a Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939. You'll be FLYING.

Talking about the corsair, is it true then that regular Pc3200 ram will suffice and that I don't need 4000 +? I really dont plan on oc'ing if I do it wont be that high. However my case is killer and it could possibly be worth it at the time. Athlon wise I know the venice is coming out but just how much better is it?
Do you think the 6800 is better than a x800? Game wise I will be playing WoW and Doom3 and HL2, then some vid watching.

I Have a 6800 (normal as far as i can tell) and it runs WoW very nicely.

(its a dell i know)

i myself plan on making my own system and as i get closer will decide on sli or not..

(i just want to be able to say, i have 2 gt6800 ultra's!!! 😛

Not realated to your build but make sure you business school doesn't REQUIRE a laptop. Mine certinally does. Infact 99% of people don't leave home without theirs.

Interesting... I actually never thought of that... Hmmm... This would change things greatly.
Howver, I could always have 2 computers right? Who said I need a top of the line laptop! Just build a bad ass machine for the real stuff, then the laptop for busy work on the side. My room mate has a 800$ inspiron 8200 lap top which is what I play wow on 512MB of ram p4 2ghz. Not the fastest machine but with all settings at their lowest @ 1024x768 I get 20-30 fps when the firewall is off. EXACTLY NEED SOMETHING BETTER 🙂. Good point though didnt think of that.
