Help for a notebook noob

Dude, that is one hell of a deal. The weight is the only prob, but you are getting one hell of a notebook for the money. Spend $30 on FS/FT and buy a used stick of 256MB or $70 online & get a 512MB stick; either way you'll be set then. That CPU w/that graphics card will run most modern games decently, just at lower resolutions. HL2 is playable @ 800x600 and moreso @ 640x480; and still looks ok
You are getting a lot of power for not a lot of money. Unless the weight will really bother you, I would jump on that.
Maybe go to a Best Buy/Circuit City/CompUSA and check out the Gateway's in person; they all have the same weight.

Otherwise go with a dv1000/ze2000 for the same price, just less processing power but a lot lighter to take w/you and better battery life.

I thought it was a good deal. I'm going to check into that as quickly as I can, since it looks like it's only good for this week. That really sucks though cuz I'm not going to be able to sell my desktop and get the money to buy this thing in under a week. I just email hp, so we'll see what kind of discount I can get for my school.

I would call HP if you want a quicker response. I don't know how quick they are on e-mail, but I hear the phone reps for HP Shopping are very friendly
GL and let us know!

Oh I definately will! After my computer is sold, my tax rebate check is the perfect amount I need for my notebook! That leads me to another, non-related question: Im horrible at pricing, and I don't sell things online, so... what would be a good price for my rig in my sig (that rhymed!) including shipping? I probably won't include the monitor, so excluding that.

While price checks technically aren't allowed on these forums, your rig listing isn't detailed enough to tell you anything. here is what i recommend:
Go on Pricewatch and look up the individual components of your rig including brand, get the lowest price
Search on FS/FT here for same or similar parts being sold
Consider that a lot of the time you will sell used computer parts for about 70% of new value and compare that to prices people are charging on FS/FT
Make a list of prices; if you want the most $, start at a high price and work your way down. If you want to sell it quick, aim low and hope for the best.
Hope this helps

Thanks again. Those dang rules 😉, can't remember em all. I'll check the prices on the stuff and see what I could get.

Don't worry about the rules 😉 The best way to determine prices for your stuff is to research research research! I also hit up Pricegrabber myself for quick general price searches. For more specific computer stuff, Pricewatch is the way to go! And NewEgg is PriceWatch doesn't have it listed, which sometimes happens

I got an email from HP, and they do offer discounts for my school. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell how much unless I'm currently enrolled and have a student ID number. I might have to wait till the end of the school year to get a discount.

Just my two cents on a laptop for you. From my experience, I would agree that a lighter laptop is the way to go if it is going to be going with you most places. You would get tired of a larger laptop I think.

That sucks!! I would still call HP. The thing to keep in mind is that you are the consumer and you ARE RIGHT! Tell them you're not enrolled yet, you can give them a direct # to verify your admission, but that you need to get the laptop in your hands by that time. Or maybe call the school and see if they can provide you with any info like that. There is a way around this, you just have to want to find it 🙂

Okay, I filled out the form with my highschool ID# that I have now and it worked! I can say that the discount is a good $60 on what I've checked new, which isn't too bad. I found these in the refurbished area, after an $80 or so academic discount:

HP Refurbs

<sigh> You know what? I can't get the power I want with the cash I have. I'm going to just keep my desktop I think, and get a cheaper light notebook for use on homework and maybe a little net surfing. Thanks for your help fbrdphreak, I understand a lot more on the mobile side now.

NP, sorry you couldn't get what you wanted. If you're keeping your desktop, look for the most basic notebook you can. Maybe try to find a refurbished Averatec; they usually go for $800 new so a refurb would probly be dirt cheap. Give me a price you're looking for and I'll keep an eye out for you 🙂

edit Dunno how low of a price you're looking for, but found this on NewEgg

ya the guy just pmed me back, it is really heavy and has 45 mins of battery life. Not good for what I need it for, but a really good price for whats in it. I'll check around and see what I can come up with. Maybe my neighbor has some old ibm thinkpads he could grab from work. Judging by the clutter in his house, I'd say he has access to all sorts of goodies. 🙂

If you get a new battery in a Pentium III ~1GHz laptop, I hear you can get upwards of 3 hours of battery life. Not too shabby, and P3's are no slouch in performance either

lol, thanks for the bumpage! Goin to bed now, so I'll check in tomorrow. Don't have school for 2 weeks, so when I'm not working I'll probably be here. You know what the first thing on that laptop is gonna be? That's right...starcraft. Then mic office, but first the classics that'll work.
