okay i have decided to join team anandtech seti@home, and i have installed the GUI 3.03 client, set up my account and am currently working on my first unit. I have retrieved my password and signed up to the team (i think?). now is there a problem with this GUI version? is the Command line client better, i sort of like how this one looks while it is crunching away. the first machine i put on is my p3 450 with 128mb's, and shortly i will hook up my celeron 500 128mb's and my amd 1ghz 256mb's. all i need to do is use the same email address? i dont have to join every machine to team anandtech right? another question is that i am thinking about hooking up 2 more of my celeron 500's 64mb ram although i am not sure that they will be crunching all that much, is it still worth it to the team to hhok them up to S@H? that would make 5 computers all together, there wouldnt be a problem with this would there?

Hi Nick burns 🙂

>>>>is there a problem with this GUI version? is the Command line client better<<<<

v3.03 which has just been released includes some extra science which improves the search ,this inevitable means longer WU's ,early reports suggest around 40% slower!.
Ref GUI vs CLi ,the CLi is a little faster than the GUI version ,in previous clients it was about 5-20% depending upon the system.
1 Major tweak that should be done for the GUI version is to enable 'blank screen' when in screensaver mode ,this halves the time it takes to do WU's due to the fact that drawing the graphics takes alot of cpu power.Go to Display properties, screensaver, settings.Set blank screen to between 0-5 mins & check the box.🙂
If you have set it to always run ,with no screensaver just make sure you leave the window minimised ,again this halves the WU times.

As for using multiple computers, if you sign each computer in using the same email address, they will all be working under the same account. There is no limit to the number of computers you can have on an account, and some people have well over 100 or more computers working for them. Even if a computer will only be working for a few hours a day, that will still add up in the long run, and is worth it in my opinion. (I have 5 computers that only run SETI for about 4-5 hours a day, but they end up giving me about 15-18 Work Units per week, which makes a big difference for my totals.) 🙂

>>>>all i need to do is use the same email address? <<<<
Yep ,just add them under the same E mail ,in select existing account (something like that).

>>>>i dont have to join every machine to team anandtech right? <<<<
No 🙂

>>>>is it still worth it to the team to hock them up to S@H?<<<
Sure is the more the merrier, you'll soon wish you had hundreds under your account😉 ,especially when you see Hell Burners weekly individual stats & Nexus 9's stats

BTW just a caution with those 64Mb PC's ,SETI uses about 14Mb of RAM when working ,if those machines have alot of programs open it'll run out of RAM & resort to swap filing ,slowing everything down.

>>>>that would make 5 computers all together, there wouldnt be a problem with this would there<<<<
Nope ,the more the better 🙂 ,some of the big guns on our team have dozens & dozens of computors🙂
BTW ,a nice 'fleet' of SETI 'ships' you have 😉

well assim1 you forgot a couple 🙂

no they don't all have to be on the team, but would be nice 😉
Every little bit helps, so even if they only crunch for an hour or two a day, it would still be helpfull.!

I think that answers all the questions!!

Thx for joining us too

<edit> dasm I'm a slow typer 😀

FD

Darn you got in between my 2 posts😛😉 hehe

Here's the link for the most recent weekly stats by Hell Burner.

BTW ref V3.03 vs V3.0 ,v3.0 is still available (from some team members),if you want the faster clients up to the deadline (which is unknown) then v3 is much quicker😉 ,if your more interested in the search being more thorough then stick with v3.03.

LOL... this is one of the great things about this Team... people falling all over eachother to help the new members with questions! 🙂

Welcome to the Team, nickburns! Hope you enjoy being on the team. Like Assimilator1 said, keep an eye open for the daily stats reports by Hellburner. 🙂

Danzig

I thought he was asking if he needed to join every machine to the team if he wanted it under his name ,but after rereading it I suppose it could mean that he wants them to run SETI for someone else (!:Q)
😛😉 ,hmm have I been greedy with 3 posts? I split my 1st reply so I could get there 1st!😉 hehe

Nick Burns

Doh! I forgot the Daily Team stats !😱
BTW ref your sig ,LOL 🙂

well thanks for the quick and thourough responses. right now with GUI v3.03, i am %5 done after 1hr 29 min????i wouldnt mid speeding that up a bit, where abouts can i find the fastest version that you guys would reccomend. In regards to hooking up my computers, i had all intentions to joining them all to team anandtech, i mean where else could i get this kind of tech support...hehe.

For the text version you can still get v3.0 from the SETI site ,look for this one - i386-winnt-cmdline.exe: 3.0 - in the table ,about 1/2 way down.
Get it from here

The GUI v3.0 they pulled because (mainly) of some minor graphical bug (the progress bar would be invisible or it would be grey).I know Bensentra98 (spelling?) has it on his site but so do others.I'll see if I can find a link.🙂

There are 2 links to v3.0 in this old thread ,I tried Bens 1 & it works 🙂
V3.0 GUI thread

Here's a thread about it being pulled v3.0 GUI yanked
Here's what SETI say about it

Oh yeah ,and Welcome to the team 😀

nickburns - the graphics take up about half the work unit's processing time, sounds like you're watching them and thats why it is taking so long. my p2-400 is usually between 6.5 - 8.5 hours.

Welcome to the TeAm Nickburns!!

5 systems should help you move up the TeAm chart pretty fast, especially with one a 1 GHz Athlon!

k, well i am going to try to get a older version then because this is taking way to long, alon longer than i gather and i this is with the window minimized. sorry but i have another question....one i complete a data unit, do i have to do anything to report that i have finished one, pass the credit to my team and begin another one? sorry, like i said this is all new to me, but i will learn it.

BTW, what version do you vetrans recommend for me?

Once you have completed a WU the GUI client will either automatically connect or ask you to connect to SETI manually ,depending on what you set it to.
I would definatly recommend a WU storing program though 🙂 ,(see answers in you other thread)
The WU will automatically be added to your account & the team total updated latter on.

See this Team listing which gives you near realtime stats of each individuals totla WU's.

As fas as clients go this depends on what systems you have.Assuming you want the fastest possible clients this is what you want.

Athlon , PIII coppermine,Celeron (& K6-3?) V3.0 CLi
PII, PIII Katmai, most S7 systems v2.04 GUI (there is very little time difference at around the 500 MHz for thr PIII Kat between v2.04 & V3.0 on average)

Thats roughly right anyway 🙂 ,can someone else confirm/deny the above table? especially with PIII Kats 450-600 & K6-3's
