Help...first build, not working

hi guys,

I need help. I got the mobo(Asus M4A88T-V EVO/USB3), cpu (Amd Phenom II 555 BE), RAM (G.Kill 4GB DDR3-1600) yesterday, and decided to test it before putting into the case. Discovered that my power supply was dead. Went to Frys and got Antec EA500D Green($59, btw, with an alleged $20 MIR, which they are not able to print out). Placed the mobo on the cardboard protective casing which it was shipped in. Inserted CPU, HSF, both the sticks of RAM. Attached the 4-pin power connector, the 20+4 power connector, and CPU Fan. Connected keyboard, mouse, monitor. Switched on psu, and nothing happened. only the 'Standby Power' LED on the mobo came on, but nothing else happened.

then tried with only RAM stick, still no luck. Attached the other 4-pin power connector(the slot was initally covered with a plastic tab, I assumed it was not needed). Same result.

I checked the power cord(since the Antec Green does not come with power cord), and there is 115V (checked with socket tester). I did notice that when i switch on the PSU, the fan does not start running. Is this because it is energy efficient or something? i thought maybe this indicate the PSU is fautly, but then how does the 'Standby_power' LED on the moboard come on?

I am complete stuck, and hope its a PSU problem. Can someone confirm this, or point me in another direction?

Just switching on the PSU won't start the PC. You'll need to connect the motherboard to the on/off switch first...then use that to turn it on.
 
no but you would need to short out the pins that turn on the PC in order for it to start - tbh you would be better putting it in the case as there is less scope for damage

thanks, that worked! I shorted the two pins for the power on/off switch using a paper pin, and everything started right up, and booted into windows(running off the boot drive from the old pc that i'm replacing with this new one).

Another problem though...my keyboard and mouse are plugged into the rear USB ports, but they are not being recognized. So get to the windows login screen, but i can't do anything from there. Is there some separate power to enable USB ports?

So how can I make the keyboard mouse recognized? Tried the other USB ports also, no luck 🙁 The old drive should have the drivers for both of them.

yes, i was able to use keyboard to get into the bios setup. is there something to set there?

Edit:
after entering bios, I went to 'USB Configuration', and saw that both kb and mouse were showing as recognized. but after i quit bios and booted to windows, they are not recognized again

you are right. i booted into safe mode, and both were recognized. it also tried to install all the drivers for the new mobo(including USB controller), but i can't use the supplied disk because i don't have the optical drive connected. I guess i will do that once the case arrives and i put everything in.

Other notes : i was able to unlock the other 2 cores, so now it shows up as an X4 B55. i did not try overclocking. My old power supply was also fine...it works as soon as i short the power on/off pins.
