I've come up empty on mcmaster carr, amazon, and google. might have the wrong search terms.

End result I need a female 1/4" -20 to male 1/2" - 20. I suspect the easiest way will be a male-male reducer and then a female-female of the same threading. but I can't even come up with a male-male reducer.

Closest I can get is this, which I'm not even sure is correct, in addition to being overpriced.

Ideas? where else should I look?

trouble is centering. needs to be more precise than I'm comfortable doing on a drill press.

If I had a metal lathe, it'd be easy.

Are you just looking for NPT (national pipe thread)? Any plumbing supply house should be able to supply you with a 1/2 male by 1/4 female bushing in black, galvanized, or brass.

i think the common NPT ones are 1/4-18 and 1/2-14

1/4x20 is not NPT guys. ;)

Is this for a camera tripod socket?

yeah knowing the application would help.

OP could find a fat ( > 1/2" threaded rod ) 1/4"-20 threaded spacer and drill ( the hole would already be centered for you ) & tap out half of it to 1/2-20 and put in a piece of threaded rod

the 1/4" half is a basically atripod socket. the other half is a grip, sort of like a drill chuck.

Briefly thought of that, but that would also require buying a 1/2-20 tap as my T&D set doesn't have one.

I might be able to drill a short section of 1/2"-20 rod and get it close enough, but I'm not positive on that. would be hard to get started w/o a good way to hold the piece of rod.
