I've personally never heard of Region free DVD player.

They might exist on Asia, not US though.

So far region free solutions are using PC DVD Drives.

Those commercial dvd players aren't region free. If they were, they'd be sued.. Hmmm, it'd be kind of hard getting one, but there have been region free DVD players. There are some ways to disable it though in some players.. Check out http://www.codefreedvd.com

Just about all HiFi & home appliance stores that sell DVD Players will mod any of the players they sell, to make tham region free, for at most a small charge (they useally do it for nothing, In the hope you buy it from them). Actually I haven't come across any that won't.

It's a simple hack they either replace a chip on the circutboard or flick a micro switch on the circut board.

Here's a link [l]http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/[/l] that might help.

There's another website that I've lost the link on that has a long on modded players, or how to mod them.

I know there's one player, which was sold with the region codeding disabled in the factory, & that Industry group was threatning law suites, to some big American chain that was selling them - it was all in the news not so long ago.

Dabanshee's right, there are a number of places that will mod your player for you, only problem is, I never heard of any in the US. If you can find a model that can be changed through the remote, that would be ideal. Otherwise, a hardwire option is next best. Also, look at the Konka, I believe that is region free, and inexpensive. along with syber's link, you could also check here for some info on making home players region free.

Does anyone know if there is a Region 7? I know of 1-6 and 8, but it would only make sense that there was a region 7 before region 8.

Notorius Apex AD600-A does. If they're any left around. I have one, used minimally, it's great, but I dont really need the DVD region unlocking, just the Mp3 support and karoke. I'd sell it if you're interested. And there is another model with the region unlock out there, but I neglected to remember it.

AFAIK the last generation of code-free Yamakawa players are coming out. The original post can be found here.
Its in German and basically says what I pointed out above, so you better hurry.

The Raite 715 is another one like the Apex. It seems that is the ssame one in Nickdakick's post as well, just under a different badge.

Raj,

Are you set on a consumer stand-alone DVD player? If you are interested
in DVD-ROM drives, a number of them can be converted to all-region...
..."region 7" or something like that.

Raj,

Yeah that's what I am talking about. You'd need a dual
output video card though...or 2 video cards in your
computer (one with RCA or SVIDEO out.)

But if some people might find it hard/troublesome to operate.

Why not a get a Japanese Sony Playstation 2 (Model SCPH-10000)? It can be "manipulated" to play DVDs region free. All you need to do is to hook up the PS2 with one of those old PS1's controller, press a couple of buttons on it and voila! You're in business.

you know what that's a great idea, I am actually gonna put one of those in my car to upgrade my mobile video system. but, why japanese and not U.S. version with a mod chip? the reason I haven't decided on that is because I am wondering if they play vcd's as well? do the playstation 2's play vcd's?

Raj, you're not gonna put a PS2 in a car, are you? I mean, it's cool but don't you think it's a little inconvenient? No, you can't just play DVDs from all regions by just putting in a MOD chip. The MOD chip only allows you to play imported games and back-up copies. The DVD is a completely different story. You'll need a driver (software driver for the Japan PS2 and for the US PS2, Sony has programmed the DVD driver into the system memory) to enable DVD playability on the PS2. So far, only the Japan PS2 (only the model SCPH-10000, Sony has increased security in the updated DVD driver that comes with the SCPH-15000) can do this because the DVD driver that came with it had some bugs that can allow the user to play DVDs from all regions insteat of just one. Oh, and no, the PS2 cannot play VCDs, unfortunately... Let's hope they will come out with a version that can play VCDs in the future, that would be really cool.

hey hunter,
i am actually gonna put a playstation 2 in my car. it would fit perfectly in my armrest console. its too bad, that they don't play vcd's though. is there a problem with using them in the car though? seems like all the auctions for japanese playstation 2's are being closed on fleabay. and they run about 400 to 500 bucks. who wants to pay that much. I am leaning more and more towards the apex.
