Help! Explorer keeps crashing :( [W98SE]

I have Windows 98 SE, and Explorer just keeps crashing, all the time. I'm fairly sure that it crashes if i have more than 3, maybe 4 folder windows open at the same time. Internet Explorer (v5.5) can also be a bit unstable with a few windows open, but not nearly so bad and anyway i've always found it fairly unstable, its not like Explorer where it WILL crash every time if i have 4 windows open. Explorer on the other hand was always very stable, this problem only occured after i did a clean install.

What happens is a message window appears on screen saying er something like (sorry i forgot the exact phrase) "Explorer has caused a fault and will be shut down", and then all folder windows close and everything dissapears from the system tray (but not from the taskbar, only the folder windows dissapear from there), i also notice whilst the icons dissapear in sys tray task manager shows they are actually still active. Note i am talking about opening folders through 'my computer', not using the "explorer" that you get from running from the start menu, which i dont use.

Full system spec in "my rig" link in siggy 🙂

much thanks

theres really not much you can do. did it happen around the time you installed something? if so, try uninstalling it. i cant think of much other than that. probably just a result of the usual "DLL hell" that happens with win9x. try doing a repair install (install over itself), and make sure you get all of the windows updates.

arg i was worrying that might be the answer 🙁 / 🙂

i think it happened more or less immediately. I havent actually gone to the Windows Update page, last time (before i reinstalled) it took an awful long time... i wish theyd just let you download the actual files and tehn run them, so I could copy them to CD for backup next time i need to reinstall, its just no fun downloading on 56k :\ I guess i'd better stop putting it off and download the updates...

hmm i think for now at least i shall leave it be, i've got too many things on the go with Uni right now to spend a day installing win over itself, and also risking new, worse problems 🙁 Hopefully the Explorer inferface thing from teh start menu is ok, and i'll just have to learn to be comfortable with that :\

cheers anyway, esp for the quick reply! 🙂
