I have Windows 98 SE, and Explorer just keeps crashing, all the time. I'm fairly sure that it crashes if i have more than 3, maybe 4 folder windows open at the same time. Internet Explorer (v5.5) can also be a bit unstable with a few windows open, but not nearly so bad and anyway i've always found it fairly unstable, its not like Explorer where it WILL crash every time if i have 4 windows open. Explorer on the other hand was always very stable, this problem only occured after i did a clean install.
What happens is a message window appears on screen saying er something like (sorry i forgot the exact phrase) "Explorer has caused a fault and will be shut down", and then all folder windows close and everything dissapears from the system tray (but not from the taskbar, only the folder windows dissapear from there), i also notice whilst the icons dissapear in sys tray task manager shows they are actually still active. Note i am talking about opening folders through 'my computer', not using the "explorer" that you get from running from the start menu, which i dont use.
Full system spec in "my rig" link in siggy 🙂
much thanks
