Help! everytime IE opens a new window, it causes a fatal error and closes all open windows!

Everytime Internet Explorer opens a new window from an existing window, like when clicking on a link or I get a popup it causes a fatal error and closes all IE windows, it just started happening today, and a reboot doesn't help any. Please tell me what to do to fix this, I have not made any changes to my system or anything, and I really don't want to have to re-install IE, and I don't want to change internet browsers either. Please HELP!

Thanks

I had an "illegal operation" error every time i opened IE last month and ended up re-installing it. Nothing i tried worked. 🙁

How about going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and try upgrading to the latest version. This might in effect replace whatever is causing the crash...

I guess I will try upgrading to IE 6. Though I have been running 5.0 and have been just happy with it, very few fatal errors and what not from it, so I figured why mess with it when I finally got a version that seemed to run good from microsoft, in my opinion a very rare thing😀

Thanks for the help, and I guess I will just upgrade and hope it fixes the problem.

Still no go when clicking on links that open in a new window, though I can now post a message to the Hard Forums without it closing the window when I click send🙂 Now if only it would open a new window correctly, it does the same either way, just closes the page when I open a new window by clicking a link that automatically does it or by right clicking and selecting open in new window. I did upgrade to IE 6.

Have you tried repairing the install? You could run MSINFO32.EXE and go to the tools section. In the section is the repair tool for I.E. Sounds like more than it will fix, but you never know. Also always make sure when you install I.E. to turn off your virus scanner. Its one of those picky pieces of software (abbreviated POS) that can't stand to be scanned while installing.

Other than that, you might want to contemplate setting aside some time and reloading. I spend more time fighting major I.E. issues when they arise than it usually takes to reload. Have you checked if you have some Browser Helper Objects that may not be playing nice with your browser. Another member recommended BHOcop to view and help you remove them (if possible, some don't like to uninstall I guess). I checked out mine with it yesterday and all I had was Adobe and a Norton (antivirus) add in.

PCmag's BHOcop

Credit goes to CZroe for the recommend (had to go do a search, cause my memory isn't as sharp as a bear trap - more like a roach motel, things go in and they never come out......😀)
