HELP!!! "Error Disabling Connection"

Hi - I originally posted this under "Networking" but have not received any response. I hope somebody here can help me.

I have an internal wireless card in my laptop. I've been using a linksys wireless router for my wireless connection. I sometimes "diable" this connection because I use an ethernet cord to connect to my school's internet (it bothers me when my laptop detects other available wireless signals - the balloon that pops up bothers me so that is why i like to disable the wireless network connection when I use the ethernet cord). But now, when I try to disable it I get an Error Disabling Connection that reads:

It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may have one or more protocals that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or system account.

What is going on? I did get a virus a few weeks ago but that has been cleared out. I also use firewall protection. Can somebody help me fix this? And if you can - can you give me baby instruction - I really really need someone to hold my hand thru this. Thank you sooooo much. By the way, I use Window XP. and the Linksys router which is now hooked up to cable internet.

I'd try reinstalling all your software for the wireless card. If that doesn't work, go to Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components. Then uncheck and re-check "Networking services" to make sure the virus didn't remove any of it. Hope that helps

Hmm, interesting problem. I recently installed a LinkSys 802.11g wireless USB NIC into this computer (W2K SP2) as well, and I get the same issue. I was hoping to disable the adaptor when I am not using the network, so as to reduce the RF radiation generated by the wireless NIC, and to reduce the possibility of someone hacking into my computer while idle.

Unfortunately, I get the same error message. However, I noticed that after I click "OK" in the dialog, and wait a few seconds, the icon for that connection in the system tray does show a disabled status, and it also shows up as disabled in Device Manager. So it appears that it does in fact get properly disabled. I'm not quite sure how/why that error message shows up during the process though. I did also have the LinkSys wireless utility running in the system tray at the same time as well, although minimized. Perhaps the error is being reported because of that program running as well, and not from the NIC itself?

Edit: Ok, interestingly enough, I didn't get that error message this time. I also recently upgraded the drivers to the newest one off of LinkSys's site. "WLAN Monitor Version: 1.1", "Driver Version: 1.0.8.0". You might try upgrading the drivers as well.

Edit 2: I'm running W2K SP2, but I've heard it suggested that if you are running WinXP, and also LinkSys's wireless Utility, that you should *disable* WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration) in XP.

So, how do I disable WZC? I am running windows xp professional......and as I mentioned, i need baby instructions cause i'm clueless. where do i find WZC to disable it. THANKS SO MUCH.

Hi,

I tried to uncheck and recheck "Networking Services" in Add/Remove COmponents and that still didn't work. I still have no clue how to "disable" WZC. I have an internal Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B in my laptop. I am using Lynksys 802.11B for my wireless access. I have no clue how to update the driver for the Intel wireless LAN 2100. Any advice?
