Help!! EPoX 8hka+ problem ???

lozina

Lifer
I don't know what exactly the problem is... but ever since I got an Epox 8kha w/ amd 1800+ for my system something has been screwy- The problem is: I can run a typical game fine and bever experience problems. But if I exit it and try to run it again, or try to load another game- it ALWAYS hangs during the intro. This is not limited to certain games- everygame i have including civ3, europa universalis 3, return toc astle wolfenstein... etc) I HAVE to restart in order to play a second game or re-load a game. Logging off and trying wont work either. Before I got my epox 8kha and amd processor i had an intel pentium 2 450 w/ asus p2b-ls mobo with all the same hardware, and i never experienced a problem like this with that system. Here is my specs:

Epox 8kha+ w/ 512 mb crucial sdram pc2100, 133 mhz system bus
AMD 1800+ cpu retail w/ alpha PAL8045 heatsink + 80mm fan
hercules 3d prophet geforce agp video card w/ latest drivers
turtle beach santa cruz video card w/ latest drivers
win2k w/ sp2

everything runs like a dream except this incredibly annoying problem which just hangs during intros of games and leaves me with no error msg or hint at whats going on. I need help bad!

any ideas would be most appreciated!!!

thx

Yeah i installed DirectX 8.0 and then downloaded the latest 8.1 build for win2k and tried that too. no luck 🙁

My system is nearly identical to yours and running sweet. What drivers are you using for your Geforce? I had problems with intermitent lock-ups when using the 23.11's and 23.12's... I went back to 21.83's and everything was fine. When it locked up on me, nothing really indicated it was a video driver problem, and I was kind of stumped... I had read of some people having problems with those versions of Nvidia drivers, so just thought I would give it a try and use the older ones.... Solved all my problems.

I don't know much but it sounds like a software prob OS or driver. Try turning off all running programs except systray and explor (anti-virus software off!) and reboot, then try games.

just a thought

I currently use 21.81 since its the latest version hercules has on their site. I'll try using the 23.11 drivers directly from nvidia to see if it changes anything

Which power supply are you using?

The reason I ask is because I upgraded to a very similar setup from an old P2/400 system and my PSU (even though it was 300W) was not adequate for the new system. It wasn't supplying proper voltage to the power rails, which would cause my system to hang up and freeze sporadically.

The Epox 8KHA+ board seems to be very picky with power supplies.......

Hey Dave,

I tried the 23.11's from nVidia and it solved the lockup problem. I just hope I don't experience the intermitent lockups you described, otherwise I'll hope they still have 21.83's on their ftp for me to try.

Let me thank all of you for helping a guy out 🙂

On the contrary. Out of all the boards I've used this one is the cleanest and provided me with the least amount of trouble. You should recommend it to your friend!

If you didn't buy a piece of hardware because one individual had a problem with it, you wouldn't be able to own a computer 😉 (or any other consumer product)

Lozina,
Glad you got everything sorted out...

As for the MB, I have had mine only for a few days, but I am quite pleased with it... Seems both stable and very fast.
