my ga-ep45-ud3p (bios f9) wont boot my g. skill pc6400 2x2gb (4gbpq) ram set in slot 1&3. The computer jsut starts running for ~5 sec and then restarts. It never even posts. if i put the ram in slot 1&2 (single channel) i can boot straight into windows. Also either chip will boot in slot one by itself.

i have tried to increase the ram voltage to 1.8->1.9->2.0->2.1v. I have also dropped the timings to 6-6-6-18, at 667

is there something else i should try? Do you think its the board?

When only running with 2 sticks, some mobos appear more stable with them fitted to Slots 2&4 ---> have you tried this ??

And untill you get your setup working, there's no point in playing around with Dram volts and timings ---> just enter and run with manufacturers default values of your particular chips, eg, if applicable:- 5-5-5-15-2t and 1.9 volts ?

:)

EDIT,

Also, stability with a E45-UD3P is often improved when you load and save the "optimised defaults" option before embarking on any overclocking activities ?

;)

i have tried slots 2&4 and it does NOT boot up.

I have load the optimized defaults with the same result.

I wasnt trying to overclock the RAM I just was trying to point out that i have tried several voltage setting at default timings without success. Both RAM sticks have passed several hours of memtest at 5-5-5-15 1.9v DDR800.

Ok, is it a new Mobo, or just new Ram, or maybe a new CPU ---> or is everything in fact new ?

Important to establish if your current booting issue is related to any new hardware changes ?

Also, if any major component is new, sometimes even just flashing with a different mobo bios, it is essential that you clear the CMOS (ie, switch off at mains and short "clear cmos pins" for 15-30 secs!

And not entirely sure why you are using F9 bios?? However if wanting to use "latest", then maybe you should give the F9L bios a try?

Just for interest, my EP45-UD3P came with F4 bios and so far i've never found any reason why I should upgrade to anything newer!

Of course, if you had other Ram to try then that could help point to whether it's your Ram or your Mobo that maybe needs replaced/RMA'd?

both the RAM and the Mobo are used condition purchases. The person (anandtech member) that sold me the mohterboard said they tested the motherboard with "4x1GB and 4x2GB 3 different brands" without issue.

the board was sent to me with f9.

i dont have any extra ram so it looks like the next step is buying some ram from microcenter and seeing if its the ram.

Just in case your particular 2x2GB chips are a "bad load" for the Northbridge, I suggest you try manually setting "MCH" at 1.3v ?

EDIT,

And memory "Trfc" should typically be in range 52-62 ?

well i tried some 1gbx2 and some other 2gbx2 and the same problem. I changed my MCH to 1.3v with no change.

trfc set to: 52

Is it the board? because as i mentioned the seller says the board was tested and worked fine. The board came with f9 and the seller said the board had never been used is that possible?

If the seller says the Mobo has been "tested and worked" then it has obviously been used ---> so what hardware was fitted to the mobo, and how precisely was demonstrated to work ??

Because you are still having problems after having tried everything suggested, including different memory types and sizes, then it appears to point to there being something wrong with the Mobo ?

The F9 Bios has been officially available since mid April 2009. So, although I personally have my doubts, it is just possible that your recently purchased used mobo could have been manufacturer supplied with a F9 Bios ?

I've had two EP45-UD3P's. First came flashed at F6 and current at F4, and neither had problems running OCZ, GEIL or Kingston Memory (involving variations 2x1Gb, 4x1Gb, 2x2GB). So if I were having booting issues with a "new" mobo supposedly supplied flashed with a F9 Bios, I would flash back to either of the Bios versions I have successfully used and try again ---> and if problems still continued, I would be then looking to RETURN the Mobo ?

:)

Usually some boards just don't like certain brands / models of ram, but if you've tried some different brands and you're still getting the same problem then i wuld RMA the board.

Two things.

1. Your CPU = E7400 so its default FSB (or strap) is 266. To boot at its default configuration, try setting memory 266/800. If that's not successful, try 333/800. What is yours at currently?

2. What about 'Normal', 'Turbo', 'Extreme' options?

i have tried:

266 with 3.0A (ddr800)
400 with 2.0B (ddr800)
266 with 2.0B (ddr533)
266 with 2.4B (ddr667)
333 with 2.0B (ddr667)

Ram is set to normal
