Help, ECS USB Wireless adapter problem.

I just purchased an ECS WU221 USB Wireless adapter which is based on a Amtel chip. I installed it on a computer with win98SE (on second floor). It can detect the wireless signal (at 45%) from the 2Wire 1000sw Wireless Access Point with integrated DSL modem, aka 2Wire homeport, on the first floor and my neighbor's Wireles Access point (Linksys) signal at 18%---I am guessing this is from my neighbor since it is very faint. I tired infrastructure mode with and without WEP 64bit and various channels but none allows connection to the 2Wire Home Port. The only way I can connect (the driver call it association) to 2Wire Home Port is using Ad Hoc mode. Of course, that doesn't really solve my problem--can't access internet on the 2nd floor. I also performed similar experiment on my other computer, which has WinXP sp1 installed, without success. I also tried to manually set computer ip, gateway ip, and dns ip as some troublshooting guide suggested. None can't solve the problem.
Can anyone tell me how to set up the ECS WU221 to communicate with the 2Wire 1000SW? If this is combination possible, then please tell me which USB Wireless adapter will work with 2Wire 1000SW. I am thinking about purchasing a Linksys WUSB11 or WUSB12. Should I forget USB wireless adapter and just go buy a PCI wireless adapter? Any suggestion on a PCI wireless adapter that will work with the 2Wire 1000SW?

Another strange thing I notice about ECS WU221 is that it is not shown on any page in the official ECS company website. What is going on here? Does this means there is no support for this product?

Any help is appreciated.
