Help! Disappointing results with 2.4C and IS7

Hi, I am having some trouble getting over the 3.0 Ghz mark with the 2.4C cpu and IS7.
The current setup is:
Abit IS7
Pentium 4 2.4C
Mushkin 1GB DualDDR Ram
Intel Stock Heatsink

Right now, the top speed it runs at seems to be ~2.9 Ghz at default vcore.
I haven't messed with the BIOS settings. Any suggestions are welcome (hyperthreading enabled? memory timings? cooling?).

How about you CPU to DRAM Ratio? Try 3:2...
Also N/B Strap from FSB800 to FSB533 just see if that works..

Both of these are in the cpusoft bios...I justed OC'd my buddies 2.4 on a IS7 to 2.8

If you adjust the N/B strap to FSB 533 you can OC the FSB from 200Mhz(stock) to 250

Also Make sure AGP/PCI ratio is locked at 66/33Mhz

that should do it..good luck and report in with results!

considering that you are using a 800 mhz fsb processor, you should set the strap to 800 and not 533...

If you don't know how to use the voltage settings safely, that's about as high as you can go on default settings.

Well, I don't want to raise the voltage with the stock intel heatsink.

So 2.9 ghz at default vcore (1.46-1.49 actual) is not abnormal?

Is it realistic to expect 3.2+ghz with better cooling and slightly raised vcore?

Bah, don't be scccured.. ;)

I overclocked a 2.4b@ 3ghz on the retail HSF (50c load)

Raise that voltage 5% and see what happens, bet you get 3ghz...

Also, bump that ram voltage up... (2.8v)

Another thing, what kind of readings are you guys getting on the 12V rail?

The power supply used was a Sparkle 400W, and the mobo readings are around 11.56-11.62v.

That is a bit low, but i think within spec.. .

That's about right for Abit motherboards.

2.9 is probably a little disappointing, I have a 2.4b on an old P4B533-V mobo and it is 100% stable at 3.1ghz. I think the limiting factor in this one is my motherboard since it is so old. But a 2.4C chip on an IS7 should do some wonders, I dunno. Try slackening the RAM timings to 2-3-3-11 or something. And adjust the ratio so you don't overclock your RAM too much. Or just keep it right on spec, I dunno what speed your memory is.

You are likely safe going up .05 or even .1 volts on the stock HS. Try it to see if it gets you a few more MHz, I suspect it will. I had to raise my voltage by .1 to get my 2.6c up to 3.12MHz. At default levels it would only do about 2.8 MHz.

I suspect there are lots of P4C CPUs out there that won't overclock by 50% despite all the reports of great success.

Make sure you have really good airflow in your case before you try overclocking. You don't wanna bake that chip.

I had an Abit IS7 and it would overclock no higher than 250FSB regardless of the vcore or memory ratio. I have used the same processor and memory on another an 875P motherboard and it allowed a better, more-stable overclock. I'm sure there are people who are getting great overclocks with the same combination but my belief is that they fall into a vocal minority of users. Your overclock is only going to be as good as your computer's weakest link (power supply, memory, cpu or motherboard). I have replaced all of the above and I'm getting a stable 2.4C overclock at 3.0GHz. From all the trouble and cost I went to to get that overclock I could have bought a faster cpu and worried less about the overclocking.

So keep that in perspective.

When I try to go to 3 ghz on the stock HSF under load (e.g. folding@home and seti@home running at the same time) the temp shoots through the roof--what gives?

The check's in the mail ;)

I'm just curious why the temp runs so high on my machine in light of numerous reports of steady 2.4-->3.0 OC with stock HSF.

what temps do you get ? The IS7 reads temps higher than other boards, according to Abit as long as it's under 70c, under load, it's ok.

Personally I like to keep temps lower than that, but under 60c seems reasonalbe given the average temps reported by people.

GtPrOjEcTX, those settings greatly reduced the problem--THANKS for the tip. Npw the reported temps don't sail towards the 100s when I open email ;)

Dead Parrot Sketch, with seti@home running, temps approach 70 (e.g. 67-68). This still seems too high. I will be adding an aftermarket cooling solution, but I am disappointed/confused by the numerous other reports of getting a 2.4c-->3.0 OC with stock cooling solution.

Guess I'm just "lucky." :frown:

Thanks for the assistance.
