Help - device failue error message - OC?

First of all, hello everyone... This is my first post, but over the past month or so, I've found it difficult to stray too far or too long from these forums. It seems like I've learned so much over just the last few weeks.

Anyway, two days ago, I put together my first PC, but I am getting an error message at random intervals. The error message says, "Windows has detected and recovered from a device failure, please save your work and reboot." The resolution reduces, as if Windows is in Safe Mode. I can continue working, but I usually just reboot. And when I reboot, everything is fine again.

Here are the specs of my computer:
P4 2.4b@2.987 FSB@166 Vcore 1.575
Volcano 7+
Asus P4G8X
2X Corsair 256 XMS 3200LL (2-2-2-5) V2.6
WD 800gb 8mb cache
Pioneer DVD 16X slot loaded
Plextor CD-RW 48X24X48
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
SB Audigy 2
Antec 430W
Cooler Master ATC-210

Temperatures
Idle 43*C
Prime95 56*C

I began noticing the error message after the OC, but I did not run the machine long before the OC so I'm not sure what that means. I then reduced the FSB to 166 from 167 and set the Vcore to 1.575. Afterwards, I ran Prime95 overnight for about ten hours last night without any errors. However, this morning when I was downloading WMP 9, I got the error message again. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with a network device since it seems to happen when I'm surfing the net or downloading stuff. I don't think it's the DVD-ROM or the CD-RW because I got the error message when they weren't even installed yet.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

remember prime is not extensively testing memory and other components. It manily is testing cpu, cache and some of the memory subsystem but not the dimm thoroughly throughout....I would look at memory speeds, timings, etc..Also you do have the agp/cpi lock enabled right???

Wow, your response time is amazing... Great thanks... I'll go ahead and run Memtest and report back.

Oh, and yes, AGP/PCI lock is stuck at 66.6/33.3.

Thanks again

Look at memory first and then lets start looking at certain components...Are you ocing that 9500pro any?? Any hacks or mods to it???

Man!!! My fdd and cd-rw won't come in until Tuesday. I guess I'll have to wait till then before I can test my memory.

I'm only overclocking the CPU and the memory, and everything else is stock. Actually, is it even considered overclocking when the memory is running below it's stated speed?

Well you may not be overclocking the memory in terms of rated speed, but the overclocking could make the memory subsystem unstable. Also you may be using too agressive of cas settings...I would use spd settings for now.

memtest is a more thorough memory, memory subsystem, and even cpu cache tester.

Thanks Duvie for the reply... the thing is I didn't change the memory timing. In the BIOS, the selection for memory timing is greyed out, and I am unable to alter it. I believe the memory is rated to run at 2-2-2-5, and that is what the BIOS indicates.

I'm going to use a friends CD-R in order to run Memtest86. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Again, thanks a lot for the help.

Well... I ran Memtest86 twice for the primary tests and once for the extended tests. The good news is that there were no errors. The bad news is that I don't know what the heck is wrong.

Another thing, I mean this error doesn't occur THAT often, but it is still bothersome nonetheless. I know this is a bit naive, but do you think that it might just go away>

run Memtest86 for at least 10 loops, that way u know that ur memory is properly able to run at those speeds, but nevermind my responese, because i am quite drunk right now 🙂

Now we can move on and unfortunately we need to take a hard look at that ati card and many who have had compatability issues...many have been with 9700pro but since they are so similar we need to look at them...

here are 2 threads where ppl have similar issues and no ocing is present and at least one other has the same Granite Bay mobo...

Link #1

Link #2

Sweet deal!!!. Hopefully, I'm not speaking too soon, but I think that everything is (or will be) ok.

Duvie, that second link you provided was perfect. Damn, hit the nail right on the head.

Thanks, again, you guys for all of the help. My gf thinks it's so corny how appreciative I am of all of your assistance. But, as I'm sure you guys can all attest, it's just sooo nice to be able to get knowledgable help regarding such issues.

I hope it works...let us and this thread know the outcome as it truly does help ppl using the search function and have similar ordeals...
