Either way, I prefer Antec over Seasonic.

Yea and that Antec is surprisingly cheap. I'm shocked I found it for only $97 shipped. Definately cannot beat that. That has to be the best PSU for the money.

After finding out today that eVGA warranties cards that have the OEM heatsink replaced, I went ahead and decided to put my Zalman VF700Cu on my precious 7800GTX. Well, this was a great idea considering, it dropped my idle temps 13C, my case temps 5C, and my cpu temps 4C. The OEM heatsink is good considering that it is quiet, but obviously doesn't do a great job of cooling. I think the whole reason the card has a quieter stock cooler is because it uses less power than the 6800 series, thereful it runs cooler, so they don't need a fan as powerful as on the 6800's. But yes, the Zalman is here to stay. It didn't change anything as far as noise goes. The Zalman has a slightly smoother sounding fan, but you can't really tell the difference unless you have the case open and you are listening for the fan anyway. The big deal is the drop in temperatures that I just recieved. Definately something to consider if you are buying a 7800GTX. Well worth the $32 that it costs.

Right now there really is no need to even overclock it. The game I play most, which is CSS runs at 120-200fps with settings MAXED out completely, and my 1680x1050 resolution. :)

Also I do think the stock cooler looks better than the Zalman, even though it isn't that important on how it looks, its just another reason maybe to keep it on, lol.

What monitor are you using to play CS:S on? out of curiousity

reason why I preach eVGA over BFG when people say they both have lifetime warranties, but BFG has restrictions.

I'll be purchasing the same Cooler tomorrow morning when I get out of work.

I was wondering how much did the cooler temps improve the overclock of the card if any at all. That's if you overclock, do you overclock?

Well I never really tested for maximum overclock when I had the stock cooler. So I can't really compare. I used to try to overclock my video to see how high it goes, but now I don't really care anymore, because you don't really gain anything but minial FPS when overclocking the video card. If you got an extra 7fps you'd be lucky. So really I just put it on for the temps to reduce, and its also slightly quieter than stock, only because it has a smoother tone to it than the small OEM fan. But the average person wouldn't notice anyway. So do not remove the OEM heatsink for noise purposes, only do it for temperature and overclocking.

Well slapped the Zalman on just a few minutes ago. Idle temps went down 6C and get this, Max load Temps went down from 78C to 62C. Packaging says it can lower your temps by 10-15, and it sure does. Definately a great cooler. I got the all copper one, with Vantec Copper RAM Sinks.

In terms of overclocking. I got it at 499/1320. Adds another 120 points in 3DMark05 and 13FPS on rthdribl. For those that dont know, it's a little visual program that demonstrates HDR, very taxing on the video card. Although I still can't get it to run full screen at 1600X1200, it does now run 1280X1024 at an average of 42FPS where before it was an average of 29FPS. So it's a good improvement.

Coolbits and rivatuner won't let me run higher than 499. I'm not sure why, but I'm thinking about trying the KO Bios to see if it'll let me run higher. I don't get any sort of artifacts at 499/1320, so I'm not sure why it won't let me run higher

That is weird because Coolbits wont allow me to run higher than 499 core either. The ram can go higher for me, but the GPU is stuck at 499.

my evga will do 515ish but as said, whats the point?

the zalman made a huge difference for me as well. not just the card but the chipset too. very nice.

if i had seen this earlier i would have told you evga has no problem with aftermarket coolers. heck, i even had to cut the wires on my 6800gt and then had to rma it and they took it no problem :) gotta love evga.

if you're still hedging on the antec tpII 550, i think i'm getting a third tonight. its just a ridiculously good psu for the $$. i too have been contemplating a seasonic for this next rig but i really can't justify the extra $$.

Interesting thread, I have been looking for information about this!
I think I will go for the 7800GTX using just the stock cooler, instead if 7800GT with Zalman VF700CU. I'm looking for a good gaming card with dual DVI, but I want it to be as silent as possible and not a jet plane. Temp and overclocking is not so important.

But Dynamix: What kind of 7800GTX are you using? I have read that the Gainward is making more noise, and the MSI 7800GTX is more quiet?
