Im wanting to get a DVD burner but not sure what kind

Should I just get a standard Dvd burner, a Dual layer dvd burner, or wait for blu ray and get a blu ray burner

Also does anyone know when blu ray is suppose to come out and how much it will be

Regular DVD burners are so cheap you should just get one now if you need one.

I'm very happy with my NEC burner.

Who knows when the PC blue-ray burners are coming out (probably summer) and how much they will be. The media will probably cost a lot too.

Any new burner you get can burn dual layer. Go spend $40 on the cheapest thing you can find and you'll get 16X single-layer and 8X double-layer burning.

A $40 NEC or Pioneer or a $65 Plextor are probably the things you should be looking at. Check out cdrlabs.com if you want the really technical info.

It hasn't even been determined if Blu-Ray will be the successor to DVD (and you certainly can't count on that if Microsoft is against it). Blu-Ray burners should be available in 6 months, but they certainly won't be cheap, and neither will the media.

well, acording to the article by anandtech at the CES, the first bluerays drives for computers are going to cost something like...1k. and they can't read/write regular cd's either for now.
(In order to get the product to market faster.) and media will probablly be kinda expensive. while mass production is bigning, it not at the point where the advantegs of 25gb blueray dvd outway the advantages of dvd (cheap and effective). i'd get a dvd burner. there is no reason not to get a dual layer one as they cost pretty much the same as regular ones. i got my SONY DW-Q30A (actually an oem Lite-On model) for like 40~45 bucks. it works great at burning and reading. it's also cheap. to conclude, get a dvd burner. Pionner and NEC, Lite-On and BenQ are considered good brands. good luck.

I am very happty with my sub $50 sony dvd burner...dual layer also!!

Just one word of advice-- DO NOT get a OEM dvd burner...

I had 2 go out on me with in 3 months....
OEM -- hardly any warranty and after 30 days you can kiss your burner good bye...

a lwsson learned!!
