HELP! DEAD SYS :(

I have an Asus P4P800 Deluxe with a P4 2.4c. I was experimenting with some OC changes, when I got a checksum failure. I ended up having to reset the Cmos by removing the battery and changing the jumper configuration (clearing the RTC RAM) at the CLRTC1 jumpers.
Once I changed the jumper from 1-2 to 2-3, I replaced the jumper to the 1-2 setting, reinstalled the battery, and then tried to reboot. Nothing happens except the fan turns on. Not sure hat to do. HELP.

Double check and make absolutely sure that the jumper is on the 1-2 pins. I've done the same thing before, when in fact I just put it back on the 2-3 pins thinking I put it on the 1-2.

What psu are you using?

Clear CMOS again, make sure system is unplugged when you do it. Leave battery out for 10 minutes.

Whereabouts in the oc guide did you get to before it all went tits up?

I am using a JustPC 425w (I know it is cheap, but I didn't know it when I built the sys).
I had basically finished the outline "Go to Advanced Menu - JumperFree configuration ? CPU External Frequency (FSB):"
It was after I made the CPU External Freq change that everything went wrong. In hindsight, a 20 MHz is too much, I think it must be better to go in 1-2 MHz at a time.

What mhz did you get upto with that last jump of 20?

I think your cpu may have got it/

That was the first CPU jump, as the outline instructed, I had made all the other chages (see outline) first. The last changes was to make the CPU change. It was after the first bump of 20 MHz that it stopped working.

i think that if all the other changes seemed to go ok, then you change one, and all stops working, it is more than likely going to be that last change that broke the camel's back -
try 1 thing first.

disconnect everything from the mobo except the cpu, ram
do you get any beeps
take out the ram if you don't - now do you get any beeps......?

Disconnected everything but ram and cpu, no beeps
Pulled our ram and left cpu, 1 long beep and two shortwe beeps

It's your ram.

Wait...what kind of BIOS are you running?

Asus...uses Award bios, at least to my knowledge. Well then this is a video error, well, both video and ram then.

"1 long, 2 short - Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information"

Well does that mean my ram (1g or DC pc3200) is dead? What about the video error, does that mean that the card that was in the sys is dead, or the video logic on the MoBo? Is the cpu ok? Is the MoBo ok???

there is no real sure way to tell without swapping things about,

this is only to narrow down the problem, to make swapping about cheaper and easier.

I think it is worth swapping the RAM first - most likely but not definite, then the vga.
Dont shoot me if it turns out to be the other way round pls

The weird thing is, I was getting video signal to the monitor (checksum failure etc.) before I shut down to reset the cmos. After resetting the cmos, then nothing until I pulled everything off...

sorry - think it is time to start swapping out pieces of hardware

sometimes, it is worth sleeping on it before doing anything.
If i do this, i sometimes come up with an idea at 4am

You could have fried your video card when you reset the cmos, ASUS usually places their's strategically in the middle of PCI slots.

If it is the video, shouldn't I have received a beep with the ram still in and everything else (including the video card) out?

depends if and where the short is.

Remember that every pcb in your system has got upto millions of tiny transistors/switches on them.

Very fragile.
I'm amazed at the success rate

I have a new MoBo on the way. If this ram has a problem will it hurt the new MoBo to put this ram in it.?

Is ther another way to check the ram, or any other hardware that I would put into the new board (I don't want to hurt the new board)?
