my mom has a p3 setup. a couple days ago, i had hooked it up to her tv through s-video, and shortly after i smelled smoke. the cpu shut down, and i determined that the fan in the power supply had quit and it got fried. I replaced the power supply with a new one, and everything seems to power on fine. there are 2 problems though, the hdd light on the front isn't blinking (may not be hooked up, i didn't check), and there is no video signal. I tried switching out both the vid card and the hdd, but no luck. any ideas?

Your vid card burned up? open your case and look at it for signs of fried components. If it is something that is fried on the mobo then it could cause the two problems that you listed... and more.

"I tried switching out both the vid card and the hdd, but no luck. any ideas? " He's been there done that.

relaxandreflect were you using dual output before (TV & monitor) or only TV? If only TV then connect it back to the TV via S-Video and reset your display properties.

Also is your internal PC speaker connected? If not connect it and see if you get any beep codes.

i figured when i tried the extra vid card, that it should automatically pick up the monitor since it was a different card. i got no beeps, but i'm not sure if the speaker was hooked up. i'm pretty sure it is, but i'll check and make sure.

thanks for your help guys. i plugged up the speaker and got nothing, so i remembered what scrapsilicon said and took out the processor. I checked the hsf and proc, then reinstalled it. booted fine. i think it may have needed reseating and a little thermal grease.

ok, so i took this back to my mom's and it wouldn't boot again, and no beeps. i tried reseating everything and it started to boot, but locked up halfway through the memory count on the post screen. i rebooted and it wouldn't boot. i reseated the memory and it worked. could this be something about to go bad, or just loose memory?

Could it be that your memory is fried? Try flopping in some new(ish) models and see if your problems vanish.
