Help - Core resets to default clock at low heat outputs - 6800gt

First of all, I'm not RMAing this card, as I removed the stock thermal paste and put some geil copper paste on it.

This is a PNY 6800gt. I can overclock the memory up to from 1000 to 1150mhz with no problems, but the core won't overclock over 360mhz (350mhz default).

Now, I know I'm not to expect that every card will overclock very high, but this card will not show any artifacts or completely crash when I push the core even to 425mhz. My max temps will not go over 65 on load. (71.84 drivers report 73C but thats about 20 percent higher than the real temps should be with 66.93)

What happens is that after pushing the core over 360mhz, after certain a couple of minutes of running a benchmark like 3dmark03 or 05, the screen will freeze in the middle of the benchmark for 3-5 seconds and then keep going normally, until it freezes again and again in different time intervals.

However, after freezing and resuming, the performance will be very bad (even worse than with stock speeds), until the next stage in the benchmark is reached, and the card performs at the selected overclock, until it freezes again and does itall over again, until the next stage in the benchmark.

When using the rivatuner monitor tool, I would notice that after each freeze the core would reset back to 350mhz (even though performance seemed worse than that). And then when the next benchmark stage would come (the screen flicks off from benchmark to windows then back to the loading screen to the next benchmark) the core goes back up to the overclocked mhz. Until it freezes and goes back down to default clock. and so on...

Since the temps don't go over 65 and the core resets like that, I'm starting to think a flash bios (maybe of the gainward gs) might help.

Has anyone ever been stumped by this before??

Any help would be appreciated.

To get some things out of the way:

Specs:

Winchester 3200+ (stock speeds while i have this issue)
Epox 9nda3J Nforce ultra 3
PNY 6800gt 256MB
1GB PC3700 DDR (Dual Channel, 1t, 2.5-3-3-6)

Stock 3dmarks03: 11200

I did use driver cleaner and installed the motherboard drivers before the display driver.

Thanks for your help.
