Help, confused about video capture.. Radeon AIW or 64....

Ok, I've read all of the stuff going on here about how the Radeons don't support VfW, etc... That's not really the crux of my question. Basically, what I want to be able to do is take 8mm home movies from my camcorder onto my system to clean them up a bit, then push them back out to 8mm or VHS tape. I was assuming that I would be able to do that with the 64 ViVo, but now I am thinking that I assumed incorrectly. Will I be able to do this with the ViVo or AIW? Or am I way off track here, and need something else entirely.

I have the AIW Radeon and all it has over the 64 mb Radeon VIVO is that it has higher quality inputs and outputs, can output 5.1, and has a tv tuner. I got mine cheap ($230 Canadian/$150 US) thats why i went AIW. If your looking to spend less go with a 32 DDR Radeon, they are cheap in the US at the moment (<$90). Peace out.

Well, yeah, that is a great price. I'd go with the AIW if it was at that price, too...

Thing is, I don't need a tuner, and am not overly concerned with the quality of the inputs/outputs. I just got a Radeon LE for my current system, but I am looking at the ViVo for a system I am building.

I definately need TV out, and have been struggling between this and a scan converter (suggested by RobsTV). I really want to do the video in, but if the 64 can't do that, then I will just go with the LE and a converter.

the 64 mb radeon can do what you described. Be careful though, the drivers are crap. there is a dedicated message board (rage3d) with thousands of upset users. If i was paying retail, i would go 64 mb as well. Peace out.

LOL, yeah, I've seen rage3d. I guess there are new drivers and MMC coming out shortly that'll fix the problems people are having (I hope)..

I have a Radeon 64 ViVo and have had no problems with video capture using ATI's bundled software or Windows ME's video package. ATI's software will allow you to capture in different formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and AVI (among others). I can't say how it performs with other software, however.

Video editing is another matter. ATI doesn't package any editing software that will do anything useful. The AIW package includes editing software, but I don't know how good it is.

I have recorded broadcast TV shows on my Duron 600 system in high rez MPEG-2 format with <1% frames dropped.

Video input is limited to a composite connection, however video output is available with composite or S-Video. Sound output and input rely solely on your sound card, so if you don't have a good one, it may cause some issues. I have a SoundBlaster Live! Value which has provided excellent performance.

I just barely got my 64MB VIVO yesterday and so for I've been happy with it, but I bought the card knowing that there were problems with the drivers, so unfortunately I wasn't surprised or two upset when I ran into them as well. The big reason I bought the Radeon VIVO was to capture tv shows and stuff from my VCR. Unfortunately video-in capture does not seem to work right in Win2k. After about 30 sec the video will &quot;stick&quot; while the audio continues to play out. The fellows on the rage3d board have also noted a similar bug under win2k and so for I have not seen or found a solution. Since use of win98 et. al. goes against my religious beliefs and salvation of my eternal soul, it looks like I'm stuck. Game drivers work great, but I've already got my GeForce 2 for that stuff. Just thought I would throw in my experience in case you are using win2k as well.

Yeah, actually, I will be dual booting the system that this goes into. 2k for me, and gasp ME for the wife. I hear they are coming out with a new multimedia center soon, and hopefully that will fix the problems. Boy, supporting the Radeon under 2 operating systems, this is going to be a challenge and a half.

I use the AIW and win2k, the s-video in was what swung me away frome the 64mbDDR, I think video conferencing support is the problem with VFW, as netshow is backward compatable with VFW and I can capture with my radeon. All the MMC features work for me.
