I just got optonline. Works fine on its own...
But I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router that I used to use with DSL a few years ago.

I plugged the cable modem into the WAN slot
I plugged the PC into ethernet slot #1.
On the Pc, I am getting a proper DHCP ip of 192.168.1.100

However, the internet doesn't work.
Am I forgetting some kind of software setting?

THANKS!

Optonline allows access via MAC address of the PC you activated the account with....
Youll have to put the MAC address from the PC in the router config pages, you might have to change the 'connection type' in there as well from PPPoe to cable....it might not say cable though...I havent been in my router config pages for a while...

Thats how I set up Moms 'net connection with her Linksys BEFSR41

Thanks for your reply.

Where do I get the MAC address?
Please be stupidly specific, as I haven't done any PC config in a long time!

After plugging in a new device into your cablemodem, you must reboot it for it to give out a new DHCP lease on the new device. I have this same service, and a similar Linksys router.

I have the exact same router that you have and I have Optimum Online and the 3Com Home Connect "shark fin" modem. All I did was connect the router, modem, and network cards together, then I just reset everything and I was connected to the Internet.

I get the IP 192.168.1.100, so I am hooking to router ok....

Can you tell me what entries you have on that router config screen?
I was told I dont enter any IP's , and just select "dynamic"

The other poster told me to enter a MAC address into the routers config screen...
But where do I get the MAC Address
And where do I enter a MAC address?

I also did this:

Turn off everything (routers, hubs, modems, pc's, wireless devices, etc).
Power to modem
Power to router
Power to wireless/hubs
Power to pc's

No luck.

Bottom line:
It works when I plug the ethernet cable from modem ->PC
but doesnt work when I go modem->router->PC

do I need to set something in "internet options" or properties??
I'm positive its a software config issue

Thanks again for any help !

Depends on your OS.

If you're using Win98 - Start --> Run --> WINIPCFG. Then make sure you get your ethernet adaptor on the pull down list and the Adapter Address is the MAC address.

If you're using Win2k / XP, I think you have to go to a DOS window ( start --> Run --> command) and then type ipconfig/all. Your "physical address" is your MAC address.

Jot down your MAC address and login to your router. You should be able to enter it in somewhere under MAC Clone or MAC Spoof. Something like that, just search through the menus.

from the Routers configuration select Wan Type as DHCP or obtain IP Automatically. Open IE and put in 192.168.1.1 and find WAN Type.

In the Linksys configuration page, click Advanced and you'll see a tab in there for MAC Cloning. You need to enter the MAC address of the Ethernet card in your PC into that space - you can get the MAC address by doing WINIPCFG if you are running Win98/Me or doing an ipconfig/all from a command prompt if you are running W2K/XP. Your MAC address will be listed as your 'Physical Address'.

Don't forget to reset the Linksys after making that change.

Thanks for the replies. But No luck, Router is getting no IP info.

I upgraded to the latest firmware (It was June 2000!)
I also entered in the WAN MAC listed in the first Config page.

My friend seemed to think it was a cable problem (b/x modem and router)
I tried all different cables. I think both Crossovers and non-cross.
The cable from the router to PC is non-cross, so I tried that one too.

Let me know if you think of anything else!

Sorry for the dealy...I hadnt checked back...

In the Router config pages...the 'setup' tab should show your IP address on your side of the router...192.168.1.1 (device IP address)

The WAN type should be "obtain an IP automatically" and it should show a MAC address right above it.

Click to the 'advanced' tab and the mac Addr clone tab and the MAC address of whatever PC works when connected to the modem should be in there.

Make sure to hit the Apply button after inputting anything..
The cables shouldnt be cross over ones...just regular cables...the modem goes into the WAN port on the router and then the router goes from port 1 thru 4 to the PC...
Then power off the modem, router and PC and power back on in order....modem, 30 sec, router, 30 sec, PC, then see if you can get 'net access...good luck!

Yea, I've already done all the basic steps...Reboot order, etc.
Nothing .....The router just doesnt seem to get any IP info from the cablemodem
So I am SOofL. My friend said it should be working...

Not for nothing, I at least installed Zonealarm, just for some protection, and not be plugged bare to the internet.
It seems to close off ALL ports when I go to the ShieldsUp! test, so good enough, I guess.
I'm getting LOADS of bounced emails, so I think I have the sobig virus, but my Piece of JUNK anti-virus doesn't detect a thing.

Still a dman hassle when I need to synch my laptop, b/c then I do need to plug into the router
(just no internet access during that)

Did you install the OptOnline software onto your PC? maybe that has to be uninstalled to use the router...I know the software has a 'registration' feature that gives OptOnline your MAC address from that PC....your sure that the MAC from that PC is in the router config pages?

When you plug the PC into the router, you get a 198.162.1.x IP address from the router, correct?

I am unable to run the OptOnline CD, b/c I am running a AMD450mhx chip.
I think the software just registers my modem, and I just had it manually done by calling tech support.
Not sure what else it does, I think configure your email address.

Yea, my PC sees the router just fine. 192.168.1.100
it's the router that's not getting any IP info.
And yea, I entered the MAC address into the router config page.
No dice

1st thing's 1st. You DO NOT need to clone your MAC addy. Optonline does not care about this.
2nd (and it was mentioned by previous posters, but u need to check again)-DSL usually uses a static IP and PPOE so u must ake sure they are disabled in the router config. WAN IP must be set to DHCP (obtain automatically)
3rd-make sure u have a patch cable from out of cable modem to WAN port of router.
After you check these things power off PC< router and cable modem.
boot in this order:
cable modem---wait 5mn
boot router---wait another 3mn
boot PC and make sure ZA is disabled

Check to see if all cables are good to.

Thanks for the reply.

Yea, I've tried both entering the MAC, and leaving it blank.
Yea, It's set dynamic/DHCP, and PPOE is disabled.
Yea., I have cables in place.

1) But what exactly is a "Patch cable"?
2) You really need to wait FIVE MINS. after booting the modem, before botting the router?
3) How can I test if I am using the right cable (crossover, regular, working, etc)

You should NOT be using a crossover cable for anything you are doing right now. If unsure of the cables, I sugest going to the store and buying a bunch of regular old cat5 cables (NON crossover).
Yeah, wait the full 5 min. what do u have to lose except 15 more mn. of your time.

I do thank you for the time you guys spent in helping me look at this problem.

I did wait a few mins b/w booting the cable modem and router and PC.
The activity light on the ROUTER flashes in unison with the activity light on the cable modem.
this is so damn frustrating, b/c they HAVE to be having some connection for that to heppen.
but yea, still NO WAN IP's anywhere for the router.

I have given up on this, and put the router aside.
@$#% it.
Now, I just go direct naked cable modem to my PC's enternet jack....And installed ZoneAlarm.

but maybe you can at least help me get this damn router to connect my laptop and PC.
I need to do that about once a week, yet it doesn't even do that anymore.
Details are at:

THANKS

HEY! maybe I'll spring for a wireless router and laptop card.
That way, I can solve the possible broken router and bad cable issue at once.
And if it doesnt work, I can just return it.
Yea, no lose !!
