Help configure gaming computer for friends son

My buddy has a budget of $800-900 to spend on a gaming computer for this son. I'm not sure what types of games he plays other than Empire Total War.

I'm asking for help because I haven't been paying much attention to the hardware scene for around 2 years.

I've configured an Intel and AMD based system at Ibuypower; both came in around $950 after shipping.

Can anyone get one in the $800 range? His only requirements are:
-Windows 7
-500g hard drive
-Wifi N

AMD would be the cheaper route if he's not into heavy gaming. As posted above, what do you already have that you are going to use ?

yes they are great... and use extremely low power. If power consumption is not a concern you might be better off with a 4870 or 4890

Heya,

You can absolutely do something great in that range. Instead of using a pre-built system, I'm going to recommend you get the parts and built it yourselves. You'll learn more, you'll have full control over what you're getting, and you'll know how to expand on it and everything. Plus it's a great way to get your friend's son active into the process instead of just receiving a big whopping $800 gift bag.
