Update #1: OK, I found out that the mobo jumpers are set so that post error messages go out of the on-board sound card, and the error message says that the system failed the memory test. The only possible cause for this that I can think is that I didn't change the bios setting for the FSB/RAM when I changed CPUs, and when I turned on the power, the mobo fried the RAM by running it at a frequency too high. The mobo should have auto-detected the higher FSB necessary for the Athlon, and ran it at the same frequency ratio as it did with the Duron, which would have pushed the RAM too fast. Could the RAM get fried in just 30 seconds? That's about as long as I ever had the computer on. I'm going to try buying new RAM right now and see if that works...
Update #2: I got the new RAM, but I still get the same message whether I have the Duron or the Athlon in there (and I tried the Duron first). Any ideas what's going on here?
-------------
This problem is driving me nuts. I just tried upgrading my Duron 1.3 GHz to an Athlon 2200+, and the computer won't post now. No beeps at all, and nothing shows up on the screen (monitor remains in sleep mode after turning on the computer). I'm running this on an Asus A7V333-RAID.
I've tried going back to my Duron, and that won't work either now. I've tried resetting the CMOS twice now by removing the battery and shorting the CLR_RST jumpers. I've tried fooling around with the bus settings, putting it on jumper-free mode (auto detect), 100 MHz, 133 MHz, 140 MHz, 150 MHz, and 166 MHz for the Athlon. I've tried jumper-free mode, 100 MHz, and 133 MHz for the Duron. I've run most of these settings at least twice now. I've tried unpluging the ATX power supply from the mobo, removing and putting the video card back in, removing the RAM and putting it back in, and of course removing the CPU and putting it back in. STILL NOTHING.
If there's a problem, why am I not getting any beeps from the motherboard at all? Help!!
