HELP: Computer Restarting Itself?!

I use Azureus to download torrents, and from time to time my computer will restart itself while I am using the application. What is going on? It can happen once a day, or even 5 times a day it is completely random and it happens sometimes when I am downloading 1 torrent or sometimes with 5. I don't get it and I want to know what to do to fix it. Here are some specs to my setup, let me know what you think is going on and how to fix it.

P4 1.6A
512MB DDR 333
160GB Western Digital HD

I have DSL and I am using a D-Link DI-624 Wireless router which I am wired to directly

I use the same BT client; I really doubt it would be a software issue.

Maybe your PSU is slowly kicking the bucket? Brownouts?

Thanks for the link, doesn't seem like there is anything out to patch that huh?

It is only when I am downloading torrents which is what I thought was odd...

I'm not terribly surprised. My home page at work is this one. There were some exploits recently that fit the situation you're describing. I don't recall the name anymore, my head's full of virus names and descriptions what with the Bagle/Netsky wars :confused:

Ever heard that story about the way to trap monkeys, by putting the nuts inside of something with an opening just big enough for an empty monkey paw? ;) I dunno if that really works or not, but it comes to mind for some reason :D Why don't you hit those two links in my signature and run the Panda av scan and the Symantec security and av scan, and also install Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2 (search Microsoft for MBSA) and run that. If it says you have weak or blank passwords, make them good strong ones, ~10 characters with some numbers and symbols, and pay attention to what else it finds too.

Bad/failing memory can do this. Try running a c-1-2-2-3-0 Memtest loop on it.

Google memtest and you should find it. That's what I did on my fiance's computer when she had the same problem. Turned out one of her DIMMs had crapped out.

also, what OS you using? :p Remember having a fun time with Win2000 doing that. It would basically BSOD for a split second before rebooting.

If you are using XP or W2K, please check the System EventViewer log (eventvwr from cmd). Is there an event associated with the restarts with an explanation (not a very informative one, but at least something)? Does it list the restart as unexpected or is there a stop/error number. This will help us a lot in narrowing down what the fault is.

I'm runing XP Pro

Next time it happens I will check and see, Do I look under APP, SECURITY or SYSTEM?

I ran MEMTEST over all my memory for over 35 minutes with over 600% coverage and cam back with zero errors

Is there one better then MEMTEST? I didn't see the c 1-2-2-3 one

c-1-2-2-3-0 are the menu options you're supposed to type in Memtest. And 35 minutes isn't long enough for a thorough test. Let it go for four hours if you really want to be sure. As soon as Memtest starts, just type that key sequence in. You'll see menus pop up as you type.

Doing it now, thanks for the explanation. It said 20 minutes on the program so I was confused but I will let it go and let you know what happens.

It just happened a second ago, when the computer restarts the message pops up saying the computer just had a serious error and a lor was created.

I checked the system log and found this:

Title: SAVE DUMP
Description: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x00000009, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000009). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini072104-03.dmp.

Have you checked to make sure all of the fans in your system are working? When my old GF3 Ti 500's fan died I got random reboots.

My NIC is a Linksys LNE 100TX v5 and it says the last drivers came out in 2001. Should I reinstall? This is driving me nuts to be honest. I checked my fans a while back and they are still going strong..
