HELP!! Computer not obtaining IP from router!

I just built a new computer. So I have two computers in my room. I got a hub so connect both the computers to my router (which is downstairs). The new computer works fine and get an IP just fine and everything. But my "old" computer isnt obtaining an IP address. Even if I manually configure it, it still doesnt work. Both computers are running windows xp. I have a linksys router (BEFSR41) and a netgear switch (FS605). I dont think its a incompatibility issue with the two brands because its the same way as if I plugged in the computer directly to the router, with no hub/switch. Please help!!

Yes, its not the new comp though that isnt obtaining the IP, its my old one that I have had for over 6 months and has been working fine until I got the new one.

Did you try to reset the router? Did you try to obtain a new IP? Did you try to run the setup wizard? 😉

Did the last two things but did not yet reset the router. I did reinstall the firmware which in essence resets the router.

What steps have you taken to acquire an IP for the old computer? Have you tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew?

Yes, I did that.

set the ip manually and see if you can ping the router you may get a better idea if its a tcpip stack error as it will fail instantly with bad address or something similar.

try that and let us know what error ya get if any.

Tried that. Requet timed out. That was what I got.

nothing is getting in or leaving your pc if you ping localhost do you get a response if not your tcp/ip or nic needs reinstalling

I get a response if I ping localhost. Not sure where to go from there.

is XP and have your turned on the firewall on the lan card by mistake?

rclick network places/propeties/rclick lan connection/proeties/advanced

Since you see activity it is just a stack error, try adding Netbeui. Sometimes adding it help as a kickstarter. After all the protcols start talking properly you can remove it but it doesn't hurt having it there either.

wellive only got a couple more things then im al out of ideas have your tried different cables / ports have you got a crossover cable between the router and switch have you plugged the pc direct into the router? (with different straight cables). is ipfiltering turned on in the tcp/ip propeties/advanced of the lan card? if none of what you have done works + all the above tests and you other machine gets an ip and one doesnt and your 100% sure the cables and hardware are all ok its looking like and OS problem.

thats about all i can offer really 🙁

Just turned on ipfiltering. I thought it was on but I guess it was off. But it still didnt work. I am going to pick up a new cable later at work. Maybe its the cable although it says that everything is plugged in.

You can see activity on a port if the cable is straight through or a cross over cable, so you may have the wrong cable on there.

Did you try to using the cable from the other PC ? since you know that is working you can see if it's a cable problem.

I have an FS105 and Im not sure if its the same as yours in setup, but mine has and Auto uplink 5th port on it. I have a standard straight cable to the auto uplink from the router as it will work with either straight in or cross over. Then 4 computers attached to it. I also have a standard 8 port switch connected to the router with a cross over. With this setup All computers have no problems with DHCP on a cheap Dlink 704 router. Are you using cross over or straight in to the switch and does it have an Auto uplink? I had better results with the auto uplink with straight in cable than with cross over for some reason, even though it is supposed to auto negotiate.

ITS ALIVE! ITS ALIVE!

Solution: Switching the cambles from the computers to the switch. Turning both computers off, boot up the older computer, made sure that it has a proper IP adress and everything then boot up new computer. Everything works fine except the older computer gets crappy speeds, it seems like its on dialup. Gonna figure out why but anyone have suggestions?
