I just finished setting up a new computer and went to turn it on. When i pushed the power all it did was make a loud noise. nothing came on the screen but the fans and lights worked. WHat could have happened. plz help!

Specs:
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
PNY GeForce 6800
Mushkin 512MB PC3200 RAM
Seagate 10gb
Antec 430W
TT Tsunami

Didn't change any settings at all.

were you able to tell where the noise came from?

Does it do it everytime you turn it on, or just the first time?

Dunno exactly where it came from cause i just turned the power off after it started. Also i wasnt able to turn the power off by the main power switch i had to turn the switch off on the psu.
is it possible the mobo or something else could have got shorted or is it just somthing like a wiring mistake?

Now that i listen the noise does seem to be coming from the psu but the fans on it are all working and other case fans are working too.

sure, but not everything works perfectely.

Sounds like everything in there is new, so something must be DOA

Is there some way to test out different parts to see which is bad?
and is there any possibilty that it could just be some simple mistake
-oh well i'll just look into this more in the morning time for some sleep 🙂

possible, but the noise doesnt really make sense

you could plug individual components into a working comp, if you have one availiable

Ok I think i've narrowed down the parts: It can't be the psu because the fan works and the so the psu must be working, it can't be the mobo because the nb fan on the mobo works perfectly when the mobo is the only one plugged to the psu, the hard drive and dvd rom all work fine, i don't think memory could cause this problem so that leaves the video card but why would it make noise like that? Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.

Oh my gosh i think I figured it out. When i was browsing around looking at other posts I realized that I forgot to check the fan on the video card and voila! It wasn't working and im pretty sure it should of been (i only have power hooked to the mobo so video card fan should work right?) If this is the problem i'll just go replace at compusa (good thing i bought it at a local store 🙂 ). Thanks Feep for your help too.

Does your card have molex connectors on it? If so, they need power from the power supply, the motherboard doesn't supply enough through AGP slot.

Nope i don't think it has any type of connector on it. It doesn't have any wires coming of it. Its a PNY Verto 6800 card.

Just because the fans are on does notmean that the PSU is working correctly.

Hmm. all other GF6800 have this connector as far as I know. It has a plug in the end, not any wires.

Glad to be able to help 🙂

how has you connected your keyboard? USB? or keyboard plug? If the last, check you haven't inserted the plug into the mouse plug.
