Help. Computer going really slow.

I installed XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Defender to clean up my computer, but ever since I did, my computer has been really slow and sluggish. In addition to this I also have Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Kaspersky Anti-virus installed. They found some things (spyware, virus), but seemed to be able to clean them up with no problems.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I was told to format my computer and install a version of XP that installes SP2 as well. I want to avoid formatting if possible. Is there anything I can do?
