I only need like 70-100 memberships to get this off the ground, and if I don't get them, I'll just call it off and refund the fee. Nothing lost, but potentially a lot to gain.

Oh. So you're going to run this out of your bedroom, using equipment you already had? And your mom is going to pay the electric bill?

All good businesses involve risk, but all good businessmen will recognize that fact! I say go for it. But expect the worst and work your business model around that, including a closure plan. Then you're all set.

Call it "LanMatrix" 😀

Don't even come up with a name. If you want, I'll help you make a "Going out of business sale" sign to put in your front window.

Only have it open from noon till 3am or something.

IMO its not a "BAD" idea todo 24/7 just not a good way to start out

start with something like noon - 3am or whatever and then if there is enough demand and you are popular enough you can change teh hours

Oh, right. Maybe I wasn't clear. I already have the above issues worked out, but thanks for telling me why my idea sucks. It wasn't what I asked for, and that's exactly why I expected the response I got. Like one or two people who contribute and the rest slamming every idea that gets posted. I ask for names, I get one or two serious ones, which leads me to believe that ATOT is composed of a bunch of worthless cynics who lack not only vision, but creativity. Thread: Which car stereo should I buy? Post: None. It'll just get stolen or broken because you can't monitor it 24/7. Thread: What should I have for lunch? Post: No need for lunch. Humans are destined to die someday... why drag it out longer? Thread: <INSERT ANYTHING>Post: Bad idea. The end. Thread: About computer games. Post: Computer games just consist of 1's and 0's being written all over the place. Who would want to do that with their leisure time? Yeah, I can slam everything too. That's not what I was asking for, though. It's much easier to tell Gates why Microsoft will never get off the ground before it actually does. By the way, the guy who's getting into this runs this used computer store... he buys surplus crap and then sells them at outrageous prices. I walked into his store and didn't think he'd be able to sell anything. But somehow, he does. Revenue isn't generated by logic. Look at Beanie Babies. I wouldn't have invested a dime in them, but the consumer craze caught on, and they wound up selling to a wide market. I only need like 70-100 memberships to get this off the ground, and if I don't get them, I'll just call it off and refund the fee. Nothing lost, but potentially a lot to gain. Games, more than anything else, have driven the computer industry. So if I agreed with everybody that my idea sucks and it'll never work, will they start coming up with names? I don't care if you like the idea or think it's not feasible... I'll worry about that part.

Okay, you obviously haven't thought this through.

Used stores sell things for an outrageous price, because older hardware is hard to find and new stuff doesn't always work with the old machines. It's also a "but this is my first computer, I can't give it up" mentality of some of these people with problems.

But...you will fail. This would work if computers were OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE, but they are cheap as hell.

Plus, you'll have your hardware stolen I guarantee. Probability is getting larger since your focus agegroup is 12-24 or whatever.

But okay...you want a name, so how about using Xirtams Failed Idea as a name?

Good thing it's not my hardware then. The hardware belongs to the guy in charge of security. If the crap gets stolen or broken, congratulations on a nice insurance check.

I like nerdvana. Thanks, the quality of posts did get better. And no, it's not going to start out as a 24/7 thing, but that's where it'll go eventually if we get the kind of memberships that I want. We'll have a few kickoff events to see what kind of interest there is, and that'll determine whether it'll work.

And if any of you have any other ideas that will allow me to get in on a profit-sharing opportunity where somebody else assumes the entire financial risk and requires no start-up capital, I would be more than glad to hear them. But until then, running a place like this is something I'm interested in doing because I think I would like to work in that kind of environment where people play instead of work.

I personally like the idea and hope the best in your venture.
I suck at names so i wont try. Keep us posted how it goes... 🙂

I think most of the people who are ripping your idea have seen the coming and going of dozens of these kinds of places.
If you want to go for it, then go for it.
But you better take a good look at what all the other's who have went out of business were doing and decide what you are going to do differently.
Personally, I wouldn't go to a place like this to play games on the internet because I can do that from home. And so can most people.
I would be interested in going to LAN parties, because it's a lot more fun to be playing against people who are in the same room. But I would only want to do this if it was to play against friends.

So if I were doing something like this, I would consider having certain open-play hours and certain hours where people could make reservations for a group of people.
You have to really decide what the selling points are going to be. Why are people going to choose to go to your place?
If you have a wide selection of games, that may be a reason for people to go there instead of buying the games.
Being able to have lan parties without all the networking equipment and hassle of setup might be a reason.
The social aspect could also be a good reason, but it would have to be a cool place to hang out. You would have to put some thought into the atmosphere and decorating.
Having the latest greatest equipment could be a selling point, but that would be expensive to keep up with.
Good cheap food and drink would probably help draw people in also.
In other words, you have to make it a really cool fun place to hang out at, not just an empty room with a bunch of computers. Otherwise, you will only get the people who don't have computers at home.

Definitely consider your advertising budget also. Without a lot of advertising, nobody is going to know you exist. I just found out there is a lan party place in my town that has been around for a couple of months, but I had never even heard of it. And I'm a gamer.
Not trying to discourage you, just giving you some of my thoughts.
