I have an old printer, Xerox XD102 that I would like to use with USB port. I looked for some cables on Amazon, and there seem to be cables that work with some printers, and other cables that seem pretty compatible, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-1689...ref=pd_sim_e_2

Otherwise it looks like you just have to try and test it, so may a few trips to Fry's will be required...

Thanks.

That cable should work with any parallel port printer. The main thing to watch for is that it is a true bi-directional cable. Usually if it says it can be used with storage devices then it is a true bidirectional cable.

Another option is an PCI slot or PCIe slot Parallel card. You can also get them with both Parallel and Serial interfaces on them.

If I use something to convert to USB instead, do you think it will work with a USB printer server device?

It may, but you need something that is definitely a BiDirectional version. And they will be more expensive than just an add in card for under $20 (at most) The add in card is 99% sure to work (as long as you have a free slot)
