help can't transmit with proxy!

I'm trying to get my other comp crunchin too...but i can't connect to the net ...i'm using a proxy to share a internet connection off of my other comp...it will get on the net fine through explorer..but not when i hit the transmit button....i've put in my host ip address and the port number and it still don't work...if anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it!

A better solution would be running SETI Q in the machine that have direct internet connection and use SETI Driver in the other machine. Have SETI Driver point to the machine with SETI Q.

Thanks for the plug on portmapper.
I installed it and set it up correctly i hope.
Now when i try to transmit the green dish flashes for a second and then back to red.
The comp i'm trying to install seti on now is running xp. I'm not sure if that would be a problem or not.
If anybody else has any thoughts i'd appreciate it.
Thanks for the reply.

Actually now i'm goin to try seti q to see what happens. I'm downloadin it as i speak.
But if anyone has any other ideas let me know.
Thanks

The problem right now is that you are trying to register the new computer and there is no connection at this time to the Seti At Home Servers in Berkeley. This effects you even if you are trying to setup a new computer through a SetiQueue. The 1st WU must pass through to Berkeley.

Am I correct in that you are entering "2" in the DOS window telling the CLI Client that you already have an established account and you are then entering your SETI EMAIL ADDRESS?

yeah....thats what i was doing...but since i couldn't connect to the net it didn't work.
Should i use the setiq on the comp that has the direct connection to the net? Or does it matter?
If i use setiq do i still have to install the seti driver to do some crunchin? The way i take it ...it is just a proxy
program.

magneto125 - there's no requirement to have Setidriver and Setiqueue together, although they can compliment each other very well. Setidriver was made to be a "stand alone" cache program on each machine, whereas Setiqueue was made to be like a centralized server to receive/send WUs to many different machines. Many people, including myself, will run both as extra insurance, ie., we will set up Setidriver to point to our Setiqueue to get more WUs. That way, if Setiqueue runs out of WUs all of a sudden (say during a long outage), Setidriver might give you a few more days of crunching before its cache runs out, and every available WU counts during outages. 😀

Regarding where to install Setiqueue, it would probably be best to put it on the machine with the connection to the 'net, although the millisecond difference of going through a machine to get to the net as compared to a direct connection, might not be a big deal.

There are a lot of different ways to skin this cat. And opinions are like a--holes, everyone has one. Ha

You do not have to run a SetiQueue, that is what I'll call a deluxe option. If you run your own Q, it will enable you to setup a configuration that will (when everything works right) direct the VLAR WUs to Win2000/XP Client machines and normal WUs to your Win9x/Me Client machines. If you have a mixture of OS machines there is an advantage to running your own SetiQueue.

I like to use SetiDriver on all of my machines (my mini-team has around 50) and each machine thereby caches at least one weeks worth of WUs. Each machine is therefore able to operate quite well on its own.

We have just recently run into a bandwidth problem with U Cal Berkeley that appears to NOT be going away. I noticed about an hour ago my computers are not able to get to Berkeley again. To get that 1st WU to pass through to Berkeley so you can start downloading WUs, you are going to have to attempt the new install between 4:00 AM CDT - 10:00 CDT to have the best chance.

This really sucks. Hope you have a little patience and hang in there.

Thanks guys for clearing that up for me.
But i still can't connect to the net from my other comp!?
I used portmapper to allow my other comp to connect but it still don't work right.
I put in allow connections from 10.0.0.2. Which is my other comps address through direct cable connection.
Does it matter which port i use? I made sure they both the same.
Also this might have something to do with it. When i'm trying to setup in seti driver do click proxy server? or no
proxy server? I been tryin proxy server. And under host i just put in the ip of my machine with the direct connection
to the net.

Then i try to setup my existing account and it says gethostbname: no such file or directory......server host unknown...
Then it just wants me to press 2 again and go through the same process again.
Any thoughts anyone?
I'd really appreciate it.

magneto125 - you have multiple issues going on here... 🙁

First, are you running windoze? If so, which versions? You might want to consider using NAT software (Network Address Translation) to configure your connections to the net from the machine with the direct connection. A problem that often comes up trying to do otherwise, is the fact that performing operations such as web surfing, grabbing mail, and downloading files, doesn't just occur on the so-called "well-known ports" (eg., port 80, 21, etc). Usually, the intitial connection is made to that port, but then once established, a negotiation occurs whereby the activity is moved to a set of high numbered ports. If you have those high ports blocked, then you're SOL.

Second, whenever you see that "gethostbyname" error (a PITA), that means that somehow, the client & SETI data server (or even Setiqueue) is not getting or resolving your machine's hostname. When you have TCP/IP setup correctly on your machines, each gets a hostname that will be recognizable out on the net. Windoze usually does this by putzing with the machine name. Broadband services/ISPs will usually have you configure your direct-connected machine for DHCP in order to automatically load everything you need. However, if that 2nd machine didn't get that critical info, it ain't gonna work too well.

If you can give some info on your OS and how your networking is configured, hopefully we can get your off-net machine talking correctly out on the net. 🙂

Ok ... heres some more info.
My comp with the direct connection to the net is running ME and my other comp is running XP pro.
I'm just using a cross over cable ( nic to nic ) to link my comps together.
I hope thats enough info.

magneto125,

Have you tried ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) in WinMe, i think it is the same as ICS in 2000, which i run on my server (SetiQ machine as well, available for public use) and every program and computer can connect on my network to the internet.

If you need any help setting it up, PM me, then i can help easier 🙂

Yeah...i used that before but it started making my comp crash and do other funky things.
Thats why i stated using analogx's proxy program.
But hey i'll give it a go again.
Thanks for the input!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that doesn't work, take a look at Proxy+ (will find link in a min if needed), that is very configurable, talk to Aiex on here, he said he will help you set that up if you need 🙂

Good luck getting it all set up and that machine online 🙂

ConfusedBW

I finally got it to work.
Thanks confused....i just used the regular old windoze ics....
To tell you the truth i forgot all about it until you said something.
Hey thanks alot to everyone who was tryin to help me out.
Maybe down the road i'll get to help some of you guy and gals out.
Thanks everyone!!!!!!!
🙂

I'm glad to help, that's what we're all here for 🙂

Don't be afraid to ask about anything in the future, it doesn't have to be about DC projects (just put OT in title, then the mods shouldn't mind 🙂😉)
