What program am I supposed to use to make a back-up of the Windows 98 CD because when I use Nero to copy the CD I always get a buffer underun error. And by the way, I am not trying to cheat Microsoft or anything because my Windows 98 CD is getting scratched because I reinstall Windows like every 4-6 months because I install so much stuff on my comp and it gets heavily used.

Sounds like your reader cant keep up with your writer. Theres no copy protection on 98 that I know of so just copy all the files to your hard drive then burn em to a cd.

Nero should be able to do it just fine... must be the settings you have...

I used Nero to make backups of win98, win2k and winXP without any problems...

your getting buffer underruns because ur doing cd-to-cd copying, which may cause problems if u have an older and slower source cdrom. I agree with baffled2, copy to harddrive and than burn it. ou only need to burn the Win98 folder

I don't think the 98 CD is copy-protected in any way. You can just copy or move all of the contents of the entire CD to a folder on your HDD, then create a data CD compilation. You won't be able to boot from the new CD, unless you make it bootable, but then if your Win98 isn't a full OEM version, it isn't bootable anyway.

ditto. I just found an old copy of win98se on my little bro's computer. A HD backup will work fine for you.

It's a Windows 98 upgrade so it won't be bootable. The thing is, I have no other CD-ROM than my burner so Nero, first burns an image to C: drive then tries to burn the image...............I guess I will just make an ISO maually and burn that image manually....wish me luck. I'll update.......thanx for ur help.

I always partion my drives so that I can copy whatever OS installation I'm using to it, if I need to format c then doing a fresh install is a snap, plus Windows knows just were to look in future anytime it needs win drivers, no hunting for a cd :)

baffled2, good point, but I really don't feel like reformatting right now.........the wierd thing is that whenever I used nero's copy cd feature, it didn't work, but when I burned the image and burned a cd manually from that image.....nero did it fine...........wierd....

just copy the win98 folderoff of the cd to your hd and burn it from there, it's got everyhing you'll need

Then open "SourcePath" string in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\key" in regedit and have it point to that folder that Baffled2 had you copy to your hard drive.

It won't ask you for your windows CD anymore during installs.
