got the vista ultimate DVD and installed off of boot because you cant go from x86 to x64 with the windows upgrade. When i get to the install screen, there is no selection option to allow a 64 bit version to install. i figured it would see my CPU and just do it autmatically, but no, it installed Vista x86 to my dismay. Can someone please direct me on how to choose the x64 option?

The retail ultimate package comes with two different dvd's, one for each. You make the choice right then as to which one you want to install and you can go back and forth acoording to the eula but can only use one of them at a time.

The version i have was d/led from Microsofts site. It is a RTM version, whatever that means.
and i thought vista comes with both versions on a single DVD...is that really not so?

So you downloaded the retail version from Microsoft? You should have downloaded the 64-Bit version.

you need to download the x64 version (I assume you are downloading from MSDN)

one DVD is for x86 and another DVD for x64

Um Ihave the ultimate.
ANd there are both dvds. Seperately behind one another on the retail

One clearly says x64 and the other says x86
