Help. Can't disable Promise Controller in BIOS.

Asus P4c800-E-Deluxe 1016 (latest) BIOS. I originally had 3 Hard Drives hooked up. A Raptor 74 gig SATA on the Intel SATA connection. A WD 120JB SE on the Promise Controller and an old IBM 30 gig on the Intel IDE Master 2 (CDROM on Master 1).

I decided I just didn't want the old, loud, hot 30 gig IBM drive, and I also thought I could go ahead and disable the Promise Controller by moving the WD 120JB SE Hard Drive from the Promise Controller to the Intel Master IDE 2.

Now comes the problem. When I disabled the Promise Controller in the BIOS and rebooted the system, it still looks for something on the Promise Controller, says something about "missing device" and "no bios installed!" and continues to boot after a short delay that this message caused. Once in Windows XP Pro, the OS tries to install a Promise SCSI device and can't find the drivers and leaves a yellow mark in the device manager.

I don't understand this. Why, when I disable the Promise Controller in the BIOS does it *not* ACTUALLY turn off? I don't want to run this controller. I want my second hard drive (Western Digital 120JB Special Edition) to just be on the standard Intel controller and not even run the Promise Controller.

I even tried reflashing the BIOS and clearing the CMOS to no avail. The damn controller won't shut off, even though I have it set to "Disabled" in the BIOS!

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? Can anyone help me?

Hmm... I used the Intenet Asus Update (also did the "auto detect" option) and it said there was a 1016 "Final" update. So I updated to that and now everything works fine. Even though I had 1016 already. Strange.

Whatever though, it works now.

It's drivers on the hard drive needs changing. I never fixed mine though. Was using an TX-133 card and moved the drive over to the on board instead. Got the same thing. It's the windows os still thinking your hooked up to the promise controller. You may be able to hook the drive up and reinstall windows over your installation.

The promise bios loads before it hits the HDD for the OS, so it has nothing to do with drivers.

Bios 1015 will let you boot without the promise.
