Big problemo, I could not get my network to work so uninstalled everything related to networking on all my machines. One of them when I connect will hook up ok but will not let me go to any url's I cannot even call up my start up page its as if I have a firewall on TCPIP, anyone got any help for me?
Win 98 SE, Dial up with modem. Right now I am signed up on two isp's and both are the same. I show hooked up at 48000.
Bleep Update---Found prob? how to fix? I need PAP and have CHAP dont understand why as this is a NT server protocal. I did not load RAS or PPTP. How did I end up with these protocal's on win 98 SE and how do I change it.

Did you make sure to install Client for Microsoft Networks (some ISPs require this) and make sure to bind TCP/IP to the Dial-Up Adapter?

Easy things to try, but easy things to miss as well... :)

That is one of the strange things, on the non working machine in dialup adapter properties the bindings are TCP/IP Dialup Adapter. On my other machines it just reports TCP/IP. Another thing weird is when I get hooked up on nogo machine at details it reports "challange handshake authentication protocal I have never seen this before.
Got to get this going pretty soon as I will be crunching randoms in about 2 hours.

Yes.. I kinda got it to work, good enough to update, I reloaded the 98 upgrade. Made a new dialup connection and got it to connect and browse. But still getting the challenge handshake protocal in the details box of the dialup connection. It took about 3 minutes for it to reconigize my password. Little update--disconnected and could not get connected I save my password in my dialup--retyped in password and saved it connected ok. disconnected and would not hook up on the saved password WEIRD

Check to make sure under the dial up you have disabled "log onto network" That can add a lot of time to the login process. Most ISP services do not require it.

Sloth:
The problem is that CHAP is for encrypting the password to the ISP.
I dont care if it takes 3 minutes to connect I just need to connect so I can reload my blocks

The reason log on to network takes longer is because it isn't actually DOING anything...

Your machine is trying to log onto an NT machine (which isn't there) and must time out it's login requests before continuing. So, if you disable log onto network, you will get moving faster and it won't change anything about your security....

LOG ON TO NETWORK is not checked, even with it checked I can still get connected but slow connecting. I cannot connect because of CHAP which is a NT protocal that I need to get off. Here is the origonal update from my first post.

Open up the registry and locate the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP key. Change the EnablePlainTextPassword value to 1.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP is the correct folder for Win98, at least. Also try searching for EnablePlainTextPassword or VNETSUP.

Another idea: apparently "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PPP\CPList\Shiva SPAP Auth CP" should be "spap.vxd".

Of course, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing here. So if that doesn't work, take two sneaky disks (to wherever you're logging onto the forums from), and call us in the morning! ;)

LMAO "take 2 sneaky disks and call me in the morning" GOOD ONE
Thanks for the way to find the problem. Here is how it started, I am getting DSL in a month and was going to put all my machines on a network and could not get it to work I am a little dense sometimes. When I decided to start from scrach and do the networking thing again I took everything down even to removing the Nics from the machines. When I reinstalled the nicks and tried to get the network going again that is when things went to pot. when I looked at the VXD that you put me onto it had some network stuff so I took out the NIC uninstalled the software from the machine rebooted and it is working the password encryption is gone I still have something called stac compression but does not seem to bother anything. Thanks very much for all the advice that I got from all of you really appriciate it.
