Did you run a bootable CD or floppy of Memtest to check for a bad RAM stick?

Did you check BIOS CPU temp to make sure you didn't mess up the HSF installation?

Are you running at stock speed?

Did you check for loose cables?

Did the HD come with an install disc? Sometimes you can boot into that prior to installing Windows and format the drive prior to Windows having to do it. Also, if you have another computer available, toss the new drive in there as a secondary and format it with the software.

Also, how do you have the drive connected and jumpered?

I would do a memory test.

This happened to me on a brand new setup, it was a bad stick of memory. Try with different memory or take out 1 stick at a time.

Memory is your most likely culprit here. From my experience new memory is more often faulty than a new hard drive.

I've seldom had problems with new hard drives, but I have had problems every time I've tried to do an install on a used hard drive without formatting it.

I'd be betting it's RAM too.

You got it set to correct voltage?
