HI,

Since I only have an INTERNAL DSL modem(which just has a phone line connector.) I guess that I can use it as a funcion of hub or something, taking advantage of its 100-base. (The current hub I am using is 10-based ans works very well, although a little bit slow.)

Any ideas or suggestion? Please tell me how to hook them up; thanks.

I'm assuming from your post that you have already bought the 314. (Reason: If you haven't, and you don't need any function other than the internal 10/100 switch on the Netgear, you might try to pick up a a simple 10/100 switch for less money. Of course, as great as some of the current deals are on the Netgear314, it might be worth it to you to have the possibility of the other functions, even if they aren't ever used).

You'll need to set the machine with the internal DSL modem up as a router (which will vary depending on the installed OS). Some options are: Windows ICS, Sygate, WinProxy, FreeSCO, etc. This machine will become the default gateway for your other equipment, and depending on the software you choose, may need to be configured as the proxy in your applications.

TallGeese,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I bought that hot deal R314 @20 after rebate yesterday. I am one of the lucky ones.

I believe that you misunderstood my question: originally I had a 10-base hub connection two PCs with 100-based ethernet cards and they work very well in terms of files sharing and internet sharing (I used WINGATE;) however I think the two PC's connection is a little slow (compared with my office's ones.)

So I decided to get this HOT deal and take that advantage of the 100-base feature of R314. When I plugged all the ethernet cables into this new Router, nothing is connected; again, originally with the old 10-base hub, all the networks is working perfectly.

Any ideas? THANKS.

Thanks.

Whoops...sorry for the original misread.

Are you getting link lights on the RT314?
If so, have you tried pinging the IP addresses between your machines?
If the pings fail, is either of these machines set to use DHCP?
If so, check the IP addresses via WINIPCFG (if using Win9x). Make sure they are correct. Especially check the "Default Gateway."

My thought is this: The RT314 probably came with DHCP enabled. If your machine that is NOT running WinGate is set to get an address via DHCP (probably so), it may have received a new one from the RT314 instead of the WinGate machine. If it did, then its current IP address may be completely incompatible with the subnet address on WinGate machine. That would disrupt all communication between those two machines.

If this is the case, simply disable DHCP on your RT314. On the non-WinGate machine, Choose "Release All," then "Renew All" via WINIPCFG. Check to see that it receives a valid address, then test filesharing and Internet sharing.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys. I figure them out now. Actually I don't need to change anything except one of my PC's IP conflicts with the router's default IP--192.168.0.1; so I change my PC's ip and restart it, now it works perfectly!

Again, thanks for your helps and thanks Anandtech.com!
