Help! Bulding My First Athlon System

I have an MSI KT-3 Ultra2-R MB with and Athlon XP 2000+ processor. I have installed the main component only: MB, Processor, DDR Ram(Crucial), HD(WD), Cd-rom, and Video card (Voodoo5500, I know I need a new one).

Everything boots up fine and runs normal, but when I install the 4 & 1 drivers the machine is slow. Menus take forever to open and the mouse is sluggish. What am I doing wrong. I have tried with the bios tweaked (as per MSI Site) and with it at default. I've also tried it with the raid enabled and disabled. I'm starting to get a little aggrevated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Von

I would highly recommend running Windows 2000 or XP because they will have more support for all of you new equipment. Make sure you have all windows updates and have latest drivers too.

Why do you want to stick with windows 98? Run 2000 and never look back. It isn't that far off from 98 and it runs soo much better, no freakin blue screen errors!

I have tried loading Win2000 and it won't install. It hangs during install and gives me a .dll error. It says I need to disable caching and shadowing. I have disabled both but it still hangs. I'm about ready to send this thing back and buy Intel.

Until you get a new vidcard, stick with Win98, the Voodoo WinXP drivers are still flaky in my experience. You may want to try different versions of the Via 4n1s.

Just a shot in the dark so please dont kill me if you've already tried this. Check your Hard drives. make sure they are running with UDMA on. I remember i had one drive revert back to PIO mode 4 or something and it was slow as H3ll. if that is the case, you might need some IDE drivers.
