help building htpc w/remote

i already have all of the parts for a celeron 466 system. i want to put together a htpc built into my home theater cabinet. i only need to be able to play mp3s and divx through my home theater system. is there a version of linux that would accomodate only this or would you recommend windows? i also would like to have a remote. i do not care if it is a wireless game controller or an actual remote, but would like wireless and preferrably RF, but don't care about that as much as that it actually works with the software. any suggestions?

I'll claim wrong forum for the second time today. There are piles of HTPC threads in the SFF forum, and in General Hardware. This just isn't the forum for this type of project.
