Tru dat. That heavy monitor and case is gonna command some shipping $$$...something around $50 after everything is in the box(es). You could shave another $20-25 by using the ECS K7S5A, but some of the "won't boot" and "suddenly died" stories I've been hearing makes me stay away from ECS. Maybe Chaintech's go at the S735 will be more reliable. I'm sure that after this post all the K7S5A owners will pip up about how reliable the board is but...:D

Str4cutter bro...

You be right...
Does NewEgg give you a package shipping rate on all those components? I know if some of these vendors shipping per item would add up to well over $100 or more. Sump' times if you can get them to assemble it the shippin' goes down.
As far as the ECS board. I know what you be sayin'. At that price it's very temping but in the back of my mind I know ECS and PC Chips are 'da same company. Then again' you never know what the guys around here are doing to 'dem. I heard every thing from no boot to no work with DDR but SDRAM does...Actually I be trustin Chaintech more but I wanna see reviews before I buy. You know where some of them be?

<< All I did was suggest that the original posted may want to invest more to get a faster machine, and that ST4RCUTTER had a lot of free time on his hands. >>

<< I don't think that GeForce2 MX 400 qualifies as a gaming card. GeForce2 Pros are already becoming obsolete.. And he wants something he can "game" on.. Also, a non-flat monitor is not very good for watching DVDs on... I would get a true-flat one. Of course, add 256 MB to the 256 MB you already listed >>

Tell me where the gf needs a faster machine. Watching DVDs? You can do that jitter-free on a P3-550. Gaming? Like I already stated, my Duron 600 is fine. I get more than 60fps @ 1024x768. I would rather have a 19" monitor than a 17" flat (which I do). Geforce2MX? It's better than what I have in my rig. And 512MB of memory? Since when did you need that much to burn CDs, watch DVDs and play games?

And speaking of 286s, do you have one shoved up yours truly, heatsink and all? You really have a talent for missing things you don't want to read.

MrHelpful,

Why don't you take a chill pill, sweetheart.

P.S. Let me know what kind of FPS you get in Max Payne at 1024x768x32. I hope it's in double digits :)

Guys lets stop arguing sheesh. Its both of your different opinions. On one side I see MrHelpFulls opinion. I mean it does make sense its an exateration that people need a system like that, but then again VBboy is the kind of person that doesn't like for his computer to operate slowly. He wants it fast and when he loads up a program, he wants it to load up now. While MrHelpFul more thinks on the lines... awww its fast enough I can wait the extra 3-7 seconds, why spend money to upgrade.

Now it really depends on the girlfriend. Is she the kind of type that wants it now and not 5 seconds later or can she wait 5 seconds. A geforce2 mx is more then adequate for any gaming right now. 512mb is overkill but with memory being so cheap it wouldn't hurt. So if you guys would both see each others opinions... there shouldn't be any problem. Also there is maybe $20 between a 600mhz duron and a 1ghz duron... i mean for $16 thats a good deal. It used to be where a 100mhz speed difference would mean a $100 difference. Times have changed though. Computer hardware is at an all time low and you can build an awesome websurfing/kitchen machine for under $400 that is incl. monitor, keyboard, mouse.

Anywho I sure hope that you both see what I mean,

later

Thanks for all the responses guys! Should help a lot.

The focus of this thread isn't really if my GF is a power user, casual user, or light user.... I just about building the BEST computer possible with a budget of $800-900 for ANY user. Boy or girl doesn't matter.

Ohh, one last thing.

Why don't you get her a pink-colored case with flowers painted on it? I hear girls like pink, and flowers say "I love you" :)

LOL VBboy.... thats the case I am going to use for my sister's comp this christmas. She plays Freddy Fish a lot so I think an ATI Radeon will do her nicely ;P.
