Help! Big problem,puter wont boot up

This is a friend computer.It wont boot into winxp.Right after bios it will ask what your boot device is?
All it has on it is the pimary master. After checking that it goes immediately to the blue screen and then automatically reboots.Does the same thing with last known good configuration and safe boot. What could be the problem? Could this be a virus? Or maybe a hardware problem?

Put in your XP or 2000 disk, boot to it, hit Enter when prompted, then F8, then do a repair on the C:\ installation, you shouldnt lose anything that way.

Do not do the repair option at the first screen.
