WEll i got the card today and intalled it. THe drivers and bios is all updated. But the card is not working peroperly. It is causing certain desktop icons to dissapear, i am unable to start or open many games, and when i try playing a screensaver or JEdi knigh academy then there are minor black dots that appear on the screen at different levels. Pls help as i am approching to a conclusion of CLEAN INSTALLING everything again.

PLS help.

My old card was a geforce 4 mx440 pci.

I uninstalled the oild card successfully but i am perplexed at this new bug.

MY system is a xp2500+ , abit nf7-s 2.0 , 512 ram, 450watt PS, 80gb hd...

Thankyou

did you remove the old drivers through the "Add/Remove" in control functions?

and then reboot?

Did you run drivercleaner and make sure all drivers leftover from the uninstallation were completely gone out of the registry?

then did you install the new drivers(52.16's or the 52.70's)?

EDIT I also see it was a pci card you were replacing w/ an agp card, did you go into your bios and make sure the Video Boot device was set to agp?

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I did remove/uninstall from both the device manager and Add/Remove programs. I rebooted, and ran DriverCleaner and removed all the nvidia drivers. I rebooted and installed the latest nForce drivers as well as the 52.70 drivers. I rebooted once again, and I still face the same problem. Some of my icons have 'dissapeared' with only the filenames remaning, and the only game I can manage to play is the Jedi Academy demo(which also loads up after a few mins of waiting). The game works, except the fps is very low (20-50) and there are a lot of these tiny square dots all over the screen.
I've also reinstalled DX9b. Speakin of which, when i run dxdiag, click the Display tab, and click on [Test DirectDraw] and [Test Direct3D], it doesn't work. I'm supposed to see a white box moving around etc. but nothing appears.
I've checked the Bios and made sure to modify all the Agp settings correctly, and even tried flashing it, but still nothing.
I have made sure that the power connector for the card is properly plugged in as well.

I don't know how to downclock it, but i'll be happy to try it if there is no risks involved and if someone could guide me.

Thanks a lot.

hmmm many black dots etc is not a good sign, sounds like a faulty card to me.I would try it in another PC if possible to confirm eitherway,I`m betting a new card replacement will fix your problem.

Search Google for "coolbits registry hack" and install the file. It'll put an overclocking tab in the drivers. Lower the speeds and see what happens.

EDIT: I run my 5900 at 75MHz core in 2D mode all the time and have no problems with it, helps keep the heat down too.

I took a screenshot of Jedi Academy to let ya'll see what i'm talking about :

Also, I managed to get the Clock Frequency thing in my nVidia options, and I see two settings : "Performance 3D" and "Standard 2D" . Under the latter, the Core clock frequency is 300mhz, where as in Performance 3D it is 400mhz. Which one should I try altering? Thanks.

BTW, I also managed to run Quake3, the fps etc was pretty good, the game was smooth, the only problem I faced was the slow loading time and the tiny dots all over the screen.

I have never had so much trouble w/ an RMA in my life.

My replacement 5900 just started artifacting today, I would rather underclock it then go through the rma hassle w/ them again.

EDIT: Got my card 7-10days after posting the following.

Let me tell you this little story, although the ending has yet to take place. So please reserve all judgement until there is a final solution. This thread maybe very useful if your deciding what company to buy from.

Aug 21th I ordered a brand new 5900 128mb online.

Aug 25th it arrived, and I promptly installed it. To my dismay the card had some issues, displaying artifacts all over the screen in 2d, Windows, and would not even run 3d. I called (EDIT) tech support after trying everything under the sun to get it to work. Both the phone Tech and myself came to the conclusion that the card was indeed DOA, and would need a RMA. The phone tech asked for a credit card number so they could do an advance RMA, and I agreed to put thee original card in the mail the following day. He also asked for a Proof of Purchase, which I also emailed directly to the support desk.

Aug 26th mailed off the original card.

Aug 29th It has been 4 days which was plenty enough time for the RMA to arrive. I then checked my tracking number for the original and saw that it had been delivered and signed for by someone at (EDIT). I called product support again and asked if I could get a tracking number for the RMA, at which time the phone tech(same tech I spoke to on the 25th) says that they are still waiting for a Proof of Purchase from me. I kindly explain that I emailed it directly to them Aug 25th. He puts me on hold and after about 10-15mins comes back and apologizes that they had overlooked it; then tells me that the warehouse is closed(on a friday at 2pm, bankers hours?) and that they will "overnight" me a card Sep 2nd when they reopen after the holiday. I'm content w/ this and hang up the phone.

Sep 2nd I call to verify that the RMA has shipped out overnight and that delivery is expected Sep 3rd. I'm put on hold(2nd phone tech so far) and after about 5mins he comes back and tells me the card has shipped and to expect a confirmation email w/ tracking info by the end of the day.

Sep 3rd I get an email w/ the tracking info; I happen to notice that the shipping method was GROUND and that expected delivery was Sep 8th!!!

I'm livid at this point. I instantly call product support(and get the same tech again) and ask to speak to a Product Support Supervisor. He puts me on hold then comes back 5mins later and says the card has shipped and he has the tracking info for me. I explain to him that I have the tracking info and that is not the point of my phone call, I tell him that the card was supposed to be shipped out "overnight" which he quips "We don't ship overnight" I'm done talking to him and once again ask to speak to a product support supervisor; I get put on hold again and eventually he comes back and says he is going to transfer me to his manager.

I finally get on the phone w/ a supervisor who seems like he is the man who is going to get something accomplished. He reviews my case and apologizes; he also mentions the fact that it should have been overnighted(thought they didnt ship overnight?), he then says to give him a few hours and he'll talk to Marketing and see what he can do.

Thats where I am now, in Limbo.

I'm hoping this supervisor is worth his water, and trys to rectify this situation. This is piss poor customer support, and a major black eye for this company. This company has flat out lied to me 3-4 times over the phone.

I see all these threads with others posters asking which company should they buy their card from and does it make a difference; and I found out these last 2 weeks, that customer service is sometime more important then the hardware itself.

I'll update this thread later w/ the final conclusion of this little story, at which time I will EDIT back in the name of the company. As I said, please reserve judgement until there a final solution.

EDIT BTW the ass-hat of a supervisor never returned my calls, they also sent me just the card back, no software no dvi-vga adapater no vivo cable. Although I sent them EVERYTHING that would come w/ retail.

lol damn Rage, that freikin sucks. Thanks for sharing it. Thats horrible though, now im thinking of just getting an ATI or something =/ ... and the worse part is that my mobo doesn't have onboard video, and I already sold my old Geforce (shippin it out on Monday) which means I won't be able to operate my comp for a loong time. Argh...plus I don't have a reciept.....

Get the eVGA card, because I have heard they have far superior tech support and services. I read that after reading some reviews of the card and some reviewers scores include customer support services and hold times and everything.

Just FYI
