I?m graduating in May in Connecticut and need to be in Eugene in June. Here?s my dilemma, how to get all my stuff out to Oregon?

I do have furniture out here, but I?m willing to kiss it goodbye. I was planning on driving myself and a friend in my 1988 Maxima, however, I?m concerned that I won?t be able to fit all of my belongings into my car.

The things I need to take are my computer, my TV and stereo, books, and clothes. I?m budgeting about $600 for the trip, but if I have left over things is there a way to get them out west for cheap? Does anybody know about shipping heavy things for cheap (freight?) Is a moving company way too expensive?

I?m hoping for the experience of ATOT to help me out.

Thanks guys.

Why not just get a small U-Haul trailer to tow behind your car? Plenty of space for what you mentioned.

Rent truck, load truck, drive truck, unload truck, return truck. <-- not that difficult.

Get a job in the new city. THen get the company to pay to move you.

That's the best way.

In today's economy and job market, good luck trying to find a company that will do that.

Oh, and whatever you do, get a flat bed for your car, don't tow it on two wheels like some idiots do.

Yeh, but for that distance he's looking at a minimum of $1200-$1500 just for the truck. Then you have to factor in gas which could easily be another $300.

A bit above his $600 budget.

Best way to do it is to find someone else graduating who needs to head to the Pac NW. Split a 10 or 15-foot Truck with them. Assuming you have two cars, you can tow one while someone drives the other.

Check all the web sites as far ahead as possible. I've moved across the country a few times. One time Ryder was significantly cheaper than Uhaul. The next time Uhaul was a couple hundred less than Ryder. Don't be afraid to call their 800 number and play one against the other.

I've never rented a trailer, I'm sure they're cheaper than the trucks - but do you really want to have your 16-year-old car towing a trailer across the country?

Convert your possesions to cash, carry em across the country in your wallet, then convert the cash back into possesions.
Will be expensive, but probably not as expensive as renting a truck.

I just moved from Washington DC to Seattle this past week. I loaded up my Civic hatchback to the roof (not counting the surfboards and snowboard on the roof). I sold the stuff i could not fit (not my computer). I made the drive myself in my 94 civic to have extra room in the passenger seat. When i got out here i went to IKEA and got all the stuff i need for cheap. Count on hotel rooms to be about $40 ish a night for a half way decent place, you will HAVE to stop to rest, i dont care what anyone else says, its tough.

You can message me if you want, like i said i just got here in Seattle two days ago, it was a tough but ass kicking drive. You HAVE to stop at the badlands in south dakota, you will not regret it.
