I am building a system for a friend the componets that we are using are:
AMD T-Bird 1.33 Gig Axia
IWill KK266-R
Hercules Prophet 4500 w/ video out
Toshiba 16x DVD drive
a really old burner
256 PC 133 PNY Ram (order didn't work bought at Best Buy)
300 watt AMD approved power supply
no floppy (right now)
no CPU fan (forgot at home did have a fan blowing on it)
the problem is we turn it on and the burner lights blink, DVD drive lights do not blink, fans turn on, fan in the front of the case, fan on the video card, and another fan we had laying around, no video or anything will come up on the screen. Computer was assambled in what I am pretty sure is a static free envirment. Two things did happen when we were mounting the mobo we had th metal pecie that it mounts to off and when we went to put it in the metal tweaked a little bit but nothing major I thought, and also the first time we turned it on and nothing happend I thought it might be a jumper but to figure out how long we could run the CPU with out a fan I wanted to feel how hot it was and I did almost burn myself on the CPU. It was VERY hot, but after that first time the CPU has remained cool. I also reset CMOS, and tripple checked the jumpers. So any ideas would be great. I am thinking that the mobo broke because we do not hear any beeps, and I have checked the plug for the computer speaker and it is right. So please help, thanks.

hate to tell you, but you just fried your cpu,

they can only run for about 5 seconds without a heatsink/fan before they burnup :(

i just had an idea,

some motherboard come with a default setting in bios that automatically shuts down the pc after a few seconds if it doesnt detect a fan hooked to the little 3pin fan header on the motherboard.

if you are really lucky that will be the problem :) but still if it started to boot up the first time and you didnt have a heatsink/fan on then you only had a few second before the cpu would be destroyed

Cooked. Burned. Fried.

"It was VERY hot, but after that first time the CPU has remained cool." Um. Yeah. Time to buy your friend a new T-bird. You said you didn't have a fan on the cpu, did you even have a heatsink? A really good heatsink might have bought you a minute or more.

Don't feel bad. It happens. You do have a spare $150, right? :D

Edit: I suppose there's the off-chance that something is wrong with the board. It doesn't sound like a grounding problem since fans came on. What did you mean when you said you "tweaked" it when you were mounting it? I'm assuming (hoping) that you didn't mean that the board was on and you saw an arc. Nah. My money is still on the fried cpu.

yep I fried the CPU, but since he forgot the fan and pushed to do it right then and I warned him not to do it I don't have to buy a new CPU. Yeah!! But the mother board was grounding or something kinda funny but we got it to work with a 850 T-bird so he will be getting a replacement, with a fan.
