Help!: Are there also ADSL dialers or not?!

Hi,

1/ First of all, are there also ADSL dialers or not?! I know that dialers use a 56k modem to dial, but if you have only an ADSL modem (no 56k modem), can you also become a victim if any dialer program/virus would be installed on your pc or is that completely impossible?!

Can somebody clarify this once and for all and also please explain a bit why yes or no, so I can understand it.

2/ I also have a question about those popups you get at certain pages that ask you to install something. Are these scripts or something? What harm can they do? I always click NO but if I would click yet accidentally, how can I remove those or can it sometimes be impossible to remove it cause you clicked yes and perhaps that's seen as "giving permission"?!

Thanks!

1) your computer can become infected whether you have a 56k modem (or any other type of modem) or not. Go here and run both the Security Scan and the Virus Detection, and see how you score.

2) I think you're thinking of ActiveX popups. It is possible to get rid of stuff installed that way, although spyware/adware is often designed to be difficult to remove. A better plan is to run a Limited account (called a Restricted User account in Win2000) so your whole account lacks the power to either make them show, or make them work either. Installing Service Pack 2 for WinXP is a good way to put the brakes on them if you can't make yourself use a Limited account all the time. Internet Explorer is the only ActiveX-capable browser AFAIK, so using some other browser is one way to avoid that.

This is for you (ongoing prevention section in particular): http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfa...s/build/resources.html Also run checks with Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.

Will the dialers actually work as intended on an ADSL conncetion? they can be installed, but dialing for foreign numbers giving you a huge phone bill?

No, they will not work. It is not possible to dial a phone number from an ADSL modem.
