Just hooked up my wireless network and when I send or receive on my laptop I hear a lot of clicking and popping and on downloads it becomes a low roar. Really annoying.

Microsoft card and Compaq Presario1200 laptop. (Yeah, I know)

Anything I can do to stop this? Could it be a bad network adapter card? Am I just too close to the base station? (About 10 feet now)

Any help or suggestion appreciated.

Thanks

You hear this from the card? Wow, I've never heard of that before. Mine are all silent... maybe it's because the card is Microsoft? :D

Just kidding, but seriously, I don't think it should be making any noise... maybe it's something else, like the HDD?

I had this problem with my wife's desktop on her desk.
Each time the card would start transferring large amounts of continous data over the wireless frequency I would hear a slight hum form the machine.
it was unnoticeable during the day with everyone in the house, but at night it was enough that i could hear it.

I cured it by moving the anntena around abit and moving the wires on the back of the PC from the sound card to the speakers away form the anntenae.

It's not completely uncommon. Used to see if every once in a while on various laptop makes and configurations. Mostly Cisco cards but I have seen it on Lucent cards as well. Messing with power saving settings in the BIOS fixed it on one model laptop, but that was only a fix for that particular model though. Worth a shot for you. ACPI and any power saving settings you have in the BIOS. Doubt it will work but wtf.

Thanks for the answers!!!!!

Installed the card on my friends computer and no problem so I guess that this is computer specific.

May try another type card or even the desktop usb type adapter as I dont travel with the Compaq much.

BTW, sound definately came out of speakers.

Thanks again to all who bothered to try to help.
