I am thinking about starting up a website but I dont know where to start. I dont have money to pay anyone to make one for me since I am just barely managing to start my business. Im just a college student trying to make some money. Where do I start, and how? I just want a simple layout like on newegg.com. I have no idea on how html works.. but heard there are sites and/or programs that help. And does anyone know anything about how I would get that checkingout and payment for items system? Do I have to hire a company for that? if i do.. does anyone know who is the cheapest? I'm soo lost.

But for the love of god learn HTML from it. Don't rely on frontpage all the time.

My personal favorite site is http://www.htmlgoodies.com You can learn a lot just by reading through the primers and basics on there. It'll at least send you in the right direction.

Most importantly, your site will be NO GOOD without a purpose. Trust me here. You can't just make a website with nothing on it. Hunker down, draw out some content, flowcharts, outlines, things like that. It will also help you in the design process.

If you need help with HTML I'd be more than happy to help you on AIM if I'm not busy at the time.

Hope that helps!

LoL. Bad advise. Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the only way to go. Of course some knowledge of HTML is always good.

You will not be able to create a site like newegg without serious investment. I suggest that you instead look into starting up a yahoo store. They are pretty easy and I don't think they require html knowledge.

BTW, creating a site like Newegg is neither cheap nor easy. Will cost you thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars.

That's so funny, because I was going to recommend w3schools.com for all your online coding needs. Also have a few other sites, but I don't wanna overwhelm the guy. But http://www.webdesignhelper.co.uk/ is another good site. You can download free templates which are pretty much already made webpages and check the out to see how they work. I always learned that top-down "programming" was easier for me :).

Cheap decent site registration is godaddy.com (there are others too). Check out various places on ATHD & ATOT for really cheap webhosting, also check out webhostingtalk.com.

Your host will probably have a board for total beginners on how to set up a website, or if they don't, google.

Free templates are available from lots of places, google it. Easiest way to get started - not fancy or deluxe, but okay.

There are a zillion places to learn "how to make a website" - try to identify your specific problem and then search.

Most important, do NOT get hung up on research. Start the site and ask questions as they come up. Don't wait until you know everything to get started.

And don't spend money when you can get something for free. Wait until you know what you're doing to spend money on hosting, SEO, programming, etc etc.

Well, this user did post he knows NOTHING about making a website. Therefore, if you are going to make a website and know nothing about it, Frontpage is the easiest. My wife uses it and so does my sister and have no problems. It does take time to learn to use, but that isn't a problem.

I use Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 and while it is nice, it is no easy learning tool for the common user who knows NOTHING about web editing.

If this user does indeed want to start a store, maybe the yahoo stores would be a good place to start.

To design a page in any of those WYSIWIG editors are pretty easy.. but when it comes to shopping carts and other e-commerce stuff, it's best to let someone with experience to do it for you as you might not be aware of what is needed to ensure security for your website and for your customers too.
