Help! Adding hard drives to an existing array.

Here's a quick summary:

- PowerEdge server with a Perc3 Dual Channel RAID Controller
- currently running 2 x 73gig SCSI drives in a RAID 1.

want we want:

- keep the existing RAID 1 setup
- add 2 more 73gig SCSI drives and set those up as a RAID 1 for storage
- have two RAID 1 configurations, 2 drives each.

my question:
- would creating another RAID 1 setup wipe out the old one?
- can we have two RAID 1 configurations with the same controller?

Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't, but you do have backups right? Raid won't save you from worms / virii / exploits / bad patches from MS / disk controller failure / fire, flood, lightning ...

Yes on some / many controllers, but you'll have to Read The Friendly Manual for yours to see if it does.

do SCSI channels work the same way as IDE channels? could I get another SCSI cable and hook up the new drives to its separate channel so I don't accidently mess up the existing arrary?

yeah we have a backup of the existing arrary. thanks.

If there identical to the drives you already have, might be better if you went with something like RAID 1+0 (or 0+1) thgat might give ya a perforance boost if that matters.
